Price Chapter Leader and Raw Milk Coordinator April 25, 2011 BACKGROUND Last Thursday, the NC General Assembly’s Joint Regulatory Reform Committee held its final public hearing in Raleigh. These hearings were a means for the committee to listen to public concerns on rules and regulations that may be out dated or obstructing economic growth. From the two sessions I attended, the majority of speakers voiced concerns over environmental protection and urged the committee to uphold the current rules and regulations. In the Greensboro hearing, I voiced my concern that NC farmers are losing business to surrounding states where raw milk is legally sold for human consumption asking that it be legalized here. In Raleigh, WAPF members Kathy Davis (a farmer) and Kevin Gordon (a consumer) each presented their two-minute argument with the same request. Of the 144 speakers in Raleigh, only one other mentioned obtaining legal access to raw milk in NC. ACTIONS TO TAKE >From these sessions we have gained the ears of a few legislators! Although the hearings have ended, the committee is still accepting written comment until 4 pm Friday, April 29, 2011. Please take a moment to submit a comment. The comments may be brief but make sure to: Mention the economic benefit to farmers. Make your request clear and to the point – don’t forget the “ask”! Thank them for the opportunity to hear your request. The more comments we have will increase our chances of moving forward. If you have already submitted comments, thank you! Let’s continue to get the message to our legislators and make the legal sale of raw milk for human consumption a reality in North Carolina!
