Deadly Feasts: Tracking the Secrets of a Terrifying New Plague
By Robert Rhodes
Review by Sally Fallon
Rhodes is another scare-monger who thinks that a plague of deadly Creutzfeldt-Jakob
disease is just around the corner. The cause: Mad cattle fed with animal
parts. The solution: Give up beef and probably other animal products
as well.
Now let's look at the facts. Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease is extremely
rare--and at least one case has been recorded in a vegetarian. Mad cow
disease has not occurred in America. Cows have been given animal parts
in their feed for one hundred years (a feeding technique that imitates
nature, as cows eat small amounts of insects when on pasture.)
Rhodes does not seem to be familiar with the work of Mark Purdey in
the UK, who has demonstrated that outbreaks of mad cow disease in Britain
have occurred only in areas where farmers were ordered to apply frequent
doses of highly toxic organophosphate insecticides to the backs of cows
in a warble fly eradication program; that similar diseases occur in
wild animals grazing in areas where the soil is deficient in magnesium
but high in toxic metals such as aluminum; and that clusters of human
cases occur in the vicinity of cement and chemical factories and in
areas with volcanic soils.
Let's cut the hysteria and take a more careful look at the chain of
cause and effect. Meanwhile we can protect ourselves by eating magnesium-rich
foods and avoiding contact with modern pesticides and toxic metals.
About the Reviewer
Sally
Fallon is the author of
Nourishing Traditions: The Cookbook that Challenges Politically Correct
Nutrition and the Diet Dictocrats (with Mary G. Enig, PhD), a well-researched,
thought-provoking guide to traditional foods with a startling message: Animal
fats and cholesterol are not villains but vital factors in the diet, necessary
for normal growth, proper function of the brain and nervous system, protection
from disease and optimum energy levels. She joined forces with Enig again to
write Eat Fat, Lose Fat, and has authored numerous articles on the
subject of diet and health. The President of the Weston A. Price Foundation
and founder of A Campaign for Real Milk,
Sally is also a journalist, chef, nutrition researcher, homemaker, and community
activist. Her four healthy children were raised on whole foods including butter,
cream, eggs and meat.
