Oregon Residents: Take Action
to Protect Oregon State Food Inspection!

This alert is for residents of Oregon, but as states across the country continue to struggle with budget problems, eveyone should all keep an eye out for similar situations in their states.

In an attempt to solve their budget shortfall, the Oregon state legislature is considering a massive cut in the budget of the state Department of Agriculture's food inspection program. The department's Food Safety Division conducts inspections on facilities other than those that are inspected by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. They are responsible for inspecting more than 9,000 food processing, dairy, shellfish and retail grocery establishments throughout the state. State inspection is
an important protection for consumers, and it can't be done without funding.

Oregon residents need to let their state legislators know that they don't want budget cuts to reduce this critical public health function of state government.

I strongly urge you not to cut the budget for food inspection in
Oregon. State food inspection is a critical safeguard in our food system,
which protects the public's health from food-borne illness and other
problems. Our food and our health should not be sacrificed because of budget
concerns!
