Mark McAfee, Founder and Managing Member of OPDC and McAfee
Farms
Mark McAfee has managed the 600 acre diversified family farm
for 24 years. In 1998 Mark was selected as the "Best of the West"
fruit grower out of 20,000 US fruit growers for innovations in food
safety. He was featured on 20/20 with Lynn Sherr for food safety and
organic innovations in 1998. He invented the nation's first Grade A
Certified, 20-station mobile milk barn. Mark served as Operations, Marketing
and Human Resources Director for $30 million dollar emergency medical
company for five years
while maintaining certification as a Paramedic over a 16-year period.
He also completed premed education course work at FSU, Chapman and Merced
JC. Earned certificate from California Poly Tech University in cheese
production technology. He personally invented all organic raw dairy
products at OPDC. Mark McAfee has been interviewed by countless magazines,
radio stations, and TV stations, and is considered an organic and raw
dairy expert. He has spoken in California, Pennsylvania, Colorado, and
Nebraska as an expert on organic raw milk issues. He is an accomplished
high performance private pilot with extensive medical mission work in
remote central Mexico serving as a mission pilot for Flying Doctors.
Recently, he has been selected to sit on the National Organic Dairy
Advisory Board. (This is a University of California research based organization
that provides funding for the advancement of important organic milk
research projects.) Is commonly referred to as "director of excitement"
by OPDC team members.
Mark will explore various opportunities available to fix the broken
food chain, and rebuild that bridge between farmers and consumers and
return the family farm to profitability. Because of the overwhelming
interest and demand for raw milk that is sweeping across America, Mark
will
focus part of his presentation on how to reliably produce safe, organic
raw milk and will explain the raw milk nutritional values and why raw
milk is the best choice because of the many benefits it provides.
Ron Schmid, ND
Dr. Ron Schmid, author of The Untold Story of Milk, has practiced as
a licensed naturopathic physician in Connecticut for over 20 years.
A graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the National
College of Naturopathic Medicine, Dr. Schmid has taught at all four
of America's accredited naturopathic medical schools, and served as
the first clinic director and chief medical officer at the University
of Bridgeport College of Naturopathic Medicine in 1999 and 2000. His
first book,
Traditional Foods Are Your Best Medicine, was first published in 1987
and remains in print today. Dr. Schmid maintains an active practice,
seeing patients at his Watertown, Connecticut home.
In April of 2003 he bought an old thirteen-acre farm and his first
cow, a Jersey named Dear that he now milks twice each day. He and his
partner Ellen are in the process of establishing a raw milk dairy. "In
many ways, this is the most challenging thing I've ever done,"
he told us. "If things go well, in a few years I'll be able to
call myself a farmer."
Joel Salatin
Joel Salatin is one of the most innovative, successful and influential
farmers working in America today. His Polyface Farm, in the Shenandoah
Valley of Virginia, grows grass-fed beef, chickens, rabbits, pigs,
turkeys and eggs in a complex rotational system based on intensively-managed
pastures and the symbiotic relationships among species. The farm generates
all its own fertility and, with the exception of chicken feed and a
few mineral supplements, is entirely self-sufficient. Salatin, a third
generation alternative farmer, is the author of many books, most recently
Holy Cows and Hog Heaven. His farm has been featured in Smithsonian
Magazine, Gourmet Magazine , New York Times Magazine, and ABC World
News Tonight.
Christine Solem
Christine Solem has been selling her raw milk goat cheeses in the Charlottesville
Farmers' Market for several decades. Now that the Commonwealth has outlawed
her livelihood, come and hear what Christine is doing about it!
John Coles
John Coles has been making and selling goat cheeses and fresh produce
in Charlottesville Farmers' Market since it started. John will present
us with some of his experiences.
Richard Morris, creator of the Bread and Money website, breadandmoney.com
Richard Morris will speak about "An Epiphany and a Plate of Chicken:
An account of one man's dizzying journey down the rabbit hole of America's
nutrition policy and the importance of being a nutrition contrarian."
Kathryn Russell
Kathryn Russell manages her diversified farm in Albemarle County that
offers cow and goat shares for the consumer. She will speak on the how-to's
of exercising your choices in fresh dairy and the dynamic growth of
share programs. She is the Weston A. Price Charlottesville Area Chapter
Leader.
