I was a very ill little girl (born in 1983) and my mother fed me soy because all I did was vomit my cows milk based formula. My whole life I have been rather ill - stomach flus every month or two and ear infections so bad I burst an ear drum. As an adult, I had gallbladder disease at 25, and now I have ulcerative colitis. I also have a baby with Down Syndrome who is now 4. I used to be extremely thin, but now I am overweight. I am always cold, as a person with low iron is, and I cannot tolerate iron supplements. I no longer consume dairy products because I cannot digest them properly. I have had my thyroid tested many times and my dr. says it's fine but the level is 3.5, which some argue is high. Not to mention I was an EXTREMELY moody teenager, and have anxiety problems as an adult. I can't help but wonder if it was the soymilk as a baby that destroyed my immune system.

My oldest was a soy formula baby and she has had no ill side effects at all. She's my healthiest kid, perfect weight range, middle of the charts for height, smart, no health issues whatsoever. My middle daughter was breast and dairy formula fed and is sicker more often than her older sister. My youngest was dairy formula fed as an infant and is now totally lactose intolerant like me. We use only Non-GMO, organic soy milk and we buy organic snacks to limit their soy exposure. I don't believe soy is bad, I just believe that everything is better in moderation.
How to reverse soy damage
written by Terry Dhariwal, Jan 24 2012
I have read that Maca powder can help reverse the effects of soy damage. This powder is made from a root vegetable called Maca. It helps balance the bodies endocrine system. It helps cure estrogen dominance etc.

DIM and Myomin are also useful.
Hypothyroidism
written by Christine Markey, Feb 03 2011
I have the same exact story as Debby posted Feb 27th 2010...my 8 year old daughter was the only one fed Soy Formula when she was an infant and is the most active of my three daughters, eats the exact same healthy diet and is overweight and her thyroid is fried. The problem is that no one knows how to reverse the damage and treat her. All of these websites say what the effects are of soy formula, but I can't find any help on how to help her. She is very sad about the way she feels(has all hypothyroid symptoms) and looks...I can't stop feeling guilty every day when I don't have an answer for her and know that I was the one that put her on soy formula at 5 months old after I quit breastfeeding and went back to work.

Supplemented breast feeding with Soy-based formula with my daughter. I don't want to worry anyone, but at two years, she had her tonsil's removed, and has been plagued with one ailment after another since, including cysts on her ovaries, heavy, extended periods, and hypothyroidism (Hashimotos). She was recommended to remove her thyroid just a month ago. I've refused, looking for a nutritional solution for now. Reading the information about soy, I can't help but wonder if it has affected her adversely. And here I thought I was helping her to eat healthy all her life--no sodas, cooking at home, whole grains, milk, canola, and soy. If only I had found this site sooner.
Don't know what to do....
written by tracy, Aug 20 2010
Our 10 mos old baby girl had terrible reflux when she was born and has been on about 5 different formulas. I didn't breastfeed and no one, including the OB, pediatrician, or the hospital nurses even spoke to me about it other than just asking me how I planned on feeding her. I wish a million times over that I had researched all of this further - I definitely would have breastfed. She has been on soy formula since she was about one month old and has done very well on it digestively. However, I recently read the book The Maker's Diet (eye opening!!) and was referred to this website. I'm really scared at what I may have done to my daughter. Is it too late to correct it? What is the best formula out there? I'm considering goats milk, but I would also like to know if there's a healthy alternative in modern formulas. Any suggestions???

I have a 5 1/2 year old boy and a 4yr old girl. My son was given milk- based and my daughter soy- based. If it does cause problems tell me why she is taller and he is always the one who is sick?

I have two kids and both were given Soy based formula. my kids could not tolerant the regular based formulas. That comment from Debby is way off. Both my kids are very tall for their ages 6&7yrs of age. Both are very smart and intelligent, not saying because their my kids. Its the whole truth. I believe that some people not only take after their parents, but can take on certain body characteristics of certain family members. Not only can they just take after mom and dad. That's why they use that term family genetics or genes. I'm not accuses you of exaggerating but that seems a bit odd to me. my 6yr old has asthma and eczema and the only thing seems to help is organics like soy products. I have never had an issue with soy but it sure did some wonders with my son who was a preemie 5lbs+ he put on weight quickly. I do agree that soy products aren't good for every one, but I can say it works for certain people and it is very healthy. You daughters seem to be doing just fine and just to be blunt i wouldn't want to stand 6feet or above that. Its nothing wrong with it if that's how tall a person already is. But i wouldn't wish that height or a short stature on any one, let alone if their confident about themselves and comfortable with whom they are and or have become.
Re: Joel & comments

In respect to Joel's comments about soy formula. Incognito has a good point. You may have biological advantages which protect you from the deleterious effects of soy that others do not have. Further to that, you are only 27 years old. You may have health problems that have not yet arisen. Also, given the mass brainwashing, it is often difficult to determine what our state of health is. For example, in this era, people consider 'depression' to be some type of 'normal condition' that requires a pill to resolve.

It is very poor logic (and science) to make claims about any particular product based upon one peron's experience of it. Life exists in layers of complexity and it can often be difficult to discern why different people react differently to the various chemicals that construct life's make-up. What is that old adage...one man's poison is another man's cure? It is unlikely that someone closed their eyes, scanned through a dictionary and pointed to the word soy, opened their eyes and said "Right, I'll construct a vendetta against *that* industry then." All events have a cause: hence, people have clearly noticed a problem with soy. Try to look beyond your personal reactions to see a bigger picture.

Lastly, a bit of advice. If you are trying to convince people of a product's efficacy and its overall contribution to your health and well-being, it is perhaps wise to ensure that your comments are grammatically sound, along with precise punctuation and spelling. Personally, I look beyond such things to discern the logic of a statement, but many people do not.

I have seen many clients with SOY damage to their bodies.
JOEL - You are 27 years old. Back in the day the did not try to poison our food so your SOY was probably ok back then. The new Soy beans are GMO and Very bad for your body. Your babies asthma will probably just get Worse over time if you keep giving the Soy formula. I am sure it was NOT the soy formula that rid the baby of the asthma. :-)

If you have damage your body or someone elses by giving them formula. the best way to reverse the damage is to give RAW Colustrum (you can get it from www.organicpastures.com).

Take care!

my daughter is now 14 and I am still trying to reverse the long term side affects of soy formula. My neice is 18 and the same thing. All of our children 7 total, were fed formula. 5 milk based and 2 soy. The two girls that were fed the soy both have thyroid, weight problems and are slightly shorter now even though they are very athletic and play sports all year round and eat healthy. The rest of our children are all tall and very lean. We do not eat junk food at all, nor do we drink pop or fruitjuices except on rare occassion. We switched our family over to 100% whole foods and everyone trimmed up even more except these 2 girls, they remained the same. It is so frustrating.
As for Joel, you may be ok now or forever, but you are a very rare case. Most boys on soy do have stunted growth. The long term side affects of soy could still be an issue though. Soy has been proven in many studies including those done by the national heart association to cause infertility (as in the case with my vegitarian sister), puts people at a higher risk of breast and prostate cancer, and much more.

i sure hope you have found some help by now! but just in case you haven't here's my 2 cents... you can make your own baby formula a lot healthier than the mass produced junk!
http://www.westonaprice.org/Re...ula.html

in the mean time, keep nursing all the time and pump as much as you can to stimulate milk production. here is a very good article on what to do about low milk supply...

i hope you can continue to breastfeed... i know from experience it's not always easy but it's well worth all the effort!

Joel,

don't be so ignorant. You're reasoning is as sound and intelligent as saying 'I was shot in the head and survived, look at I'm fine!' Babies are fed formula too and are alive, doesn't mean it's a healthy choice.

Joel but you know that Soy it is a food not even intended for the male as it produces estrogen? But the point is.. soy or cow, it should NOT be given to a newborn/infant. IT'S BREASTMILK WAS IS BEST and tailored ONLY for the human babies. period.

This whole powerpoint on why soybased formula is bad is wrong. Im 27 years old and was raised with soybased formula and im 6'3" 225 pounds. I have always been a reaaly healthy person. As a matter a fact i had asthma as a baby and when switched to soybased formula was rid of asthma. Soybased is way better and im living proof.
