Deadly Feasts: Tracking the Secrets of a Terrifying New Plague By Robert Rhodes Review by Sally Fallon
Rhodes is another scare-monger who thinks that a plague of deadly Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease is just around the corner. The cause: Mad cattle fed with animal parts. The solution: Give up beef and probably other animal products as well.
Now let's look at the facts. Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease is extremely rare--and at least one case has been recorded in a vegetarian. Mad cow disease has not occurred in America. Cows have been given animal parts in their feed for one hundred years (a feeding technique that imitates nature, as cows eat small amounts of insects when on pasture.)
Rhodes does not seem to be familiar with the work of Mark Purdey in the UK, who has demonstrated that outbreaks of mad cow disease in Britain have occurred only in areas where farmers were ordered to apply frequent doses of highly toxic organophosphate insecticides to the backs of cows in a warble fly eradication program; that similar diseases occur in wild animals grazing in areas where the soil is deficient in magnesium but high in toxic metals such as aluminum; and that clusters of human cases occur in the vicinity of cement and chemical factories and in areas with volcanic soils.
Let's cut the hysteria and take a more careful look at the chain of cause and effect. Meanwhile we can protect ourselves by eating magnesi
