Q. Is it okay to consume a food based prenatal vitamin during pregnancy while adhering to the Weston A Price pregnancy diet? (I am thinking particularly of the first trimester when morning sickness can drastically cut down on how much and what one is willing to eat.)
A. I’d have to see the prenatal. We do not recommend pre natal vitamins because they contain synthetic vitamin A and the synthetic can cause birth defects. Better to continue with the cod liver oil. Eat lots of leafy greens for folic acid. Click here for our diet for pregnant women. By the way, raw milk is great for morning sickness.
Q. Can I drink kombucha during pregnancy?
A. If you are used to drinking kombucha, you can drink it while pregnant. It would be a good thing to drink 4 to 6 ounces with meals. However, if you have not drunk kombucha before, don’t start while you are pregnant because occasionally someone has an adverse reaction and we don’t want that to happen while you are pregnant. Don’t let kombucha be a substitute for your one quart of raw milk per day.
Q. I was told not to consume fermented foods and drinks or raw fish while pregnant.
A. Kefir is very safe for pregnant women, as is raw milk–we recommend 1 qt per day of raw milk for pregnant women.
As for kombucha, what I tell pregnant women is that if you have been drinking kombucha with no problem, it is fine and very healthy to drink it while pregnant. Occasionally someone has a bad reaction to kombucha and you would not want that to happen while pregnant, but if you have been drinking it all along, fine if you are pregnant.
As for sushi, that I would steer clear of while pregnant, because of the threat of parasites. But lacto-fermented fish would be fine.
See this link for diet for pregnant women.
The establishment also tells pregnant women that cod liver oil and liver are dangerous–yet these are very important to consume while pregnant.
Q. Is it okay to take a pea-sized frozen piece of cow’s liver a day while pregnant? What is the age that one can start children on this?
A. This is a GREAT idea–even more than a pea-sized. An ounce or more a day is fine. One can start at age 4-6 months with children. Raw grated liver should be one of baby’s first foods. But better to give the liver as food to children rather than pea sized bites as these might be difficult to swallow.
Q. What to do for a young pregnant woman who wants to eat well but is having a lot of vomiting and aversion to the important foods?
A. The best thing we have found for morning sickness (which is probably what is making you so sensitive to smells and tastes) is raw milk sipped throughout the day (just sips, no gulps). Do you have access to raw cow’s milk? That might have a better taste for her. You could warm up the milk with a little maple syrup and cinnamon, for example.
Swedish bitters, 1/2 tsp in water, morning and evening, might help with the aversion to fat. Even a little vinegar in water might help.
Broth-based soups with lots of vegetables would be good–you could cut meat up very finely into the soup, even a little liver cut up very finely. The glycine in the broth will compensate for the generally low protein diet.
How is cheese? That would be an excellent food for her.
Regarding eggs, the yolks are more important than the whites. So, for example, if eating scrambled eggs, add an additional yolk. You might also try making custard with egg yolks and cream. . . sweetened with maple syrup, for example. It is important to get egg yolks into the diet, in whatever way possible.
Q: I read on your site that cod liver oil shouldn’t be taken during pregnancy unless the entire WAP
diet is followed. I am taking cod liver oil – does this mean that I shouldn’t since I can’t follow the diet exactly?
A: You don’t have to avoid cod liver oil if the entire diet is not followed. I would highly recommend it.
Q: About evening primrose oil – I have heard that people take it at the end of pregnancy to induce
contractions. It supposedly contracts/softens the cervix. Allegedly, there is not enough evidence to say it’s safe during pregnancy. Having said this, I believe in alternative methods. I would follow Sally Fallon’s recommendation over a general MD. I just want to make sure it’s safe.
A: It is safe, but I have never heard of taking it at the end of pregnancy to induce contractions.
Q: I have been implementing the motherhood diet since before becoming pregnant. (I am now pregnant) and am noticing my body is having issues adapting. It may be too much calcium and not enough magnesium? Digestion is slowing down and I’m getting more headaches. What foods offer magnesium in the pregnancy diet?
A: Eat plenty of unrefined salt for starters. Important part of the diet are beans, meat and raw milk, each contain lots of magnesium. If you still seem to be suffering from magnesium deficiency, you can take a supplement, under supervision of a practitioner.

Raw milk & campylobacter
I was told the raw milk I was drinking during my second pregnancy was how I ended up with campylobacter – would this be the case and if so how would you avoid it?

I wouldn’t worry about it… by getting campy the first time you strengthened your immune system so you shouldn’t get it again.

You also need to consider whether the raw milk was really the cause of the infection, or whether blaming the raw milk was a knee-jerk reaction from the authorities infected with raw milk phobia. Sorry this is old, but I had to comment!

I am breastfeeding right now and am thinking I may be pregnant now or may be soon… I need to change my diet, but this is all (WAP) very new and overwhelming to me. I would like to take pre-natal vitamins as this seems to be a really easy first step and in my web-search came across the information here: NOT to take pre-natal. That’s a bit frustrating. These (Life Time, Professional Pre-Natal Formula) were recommended to me. Would it be OK to take these while I am learning about the W.A.P diet and figuring out how to make it work with my budget?
Aside from diet for myself, I am concerned about milk supply. When my son was 4.5 months old, I became pregnant with my daughter who is now almost 7 months old. By the time my son was 7 months, my milk was gone. I don’t want this to happen again, and am thinking diet will help. Just another motivator to change my diet. I’d appreciate any input here.
Elizabeth.

I would wean her very gradually, she can go right onto raw milk (no need to make the formula). Since you are now really eating for three, it is REALLY important to follow our Diet for Pregnant and Nursing Mothers. Best,

Given your age, I do think it would be better to wean your daughter before getting pregnant again. You’ve been a great mom to breastfeed her for so long, and she could transition to raw milk now.

You might try vitamin B6 capsules. I would keep trying raw milk, sipped very slowly.

Multivitamin
I’ve found these http://www.newchapter.com/mult…ment-facts from New Chapter and think they might be a pretty good multivitamin during pregnancy.
They are made from biological gmo-free wholefoods with natural production processes. There’s a little soy in it… but it’s fermented smilies/cheesy.gif
They contain natural pre-vitamin a as beta-carotene which seems almost irrelevant but not necessarily harmful when combined with a cod liver oil (we use the royal one with butter oil from blue ice).
The only thing I’m a little concerned about is the addition of the ‘Breast support blend’: sprouted seeds: Organic Broccoli; Organic Cauliflower; Organic Kale; Organic Daikon Radish; Organic Cabbage; Organic Mustard. It’s just 100mg I’ve just send them an email asking them to relate it to this article about our crucifers friends: http://www.westonaprice.org/ba…-the-cross in which Chris Masterjohn states that we need to be careful with them. Especially the boccoli sprouts since they contain high amounts of nitriles. This was 20minutes ago, but i’ll update when i get a response.
Meanwhile I’m curious how these rate on the ‘WAPF index’smilies/wink.gif
Anyone?

Raw meat during pregnancy?
Hi, I have been following the NT guidelines for awhile and love it. I have just found out I am pregnant. I normally eat some raw meat every week, grass fed, etc. Should I continue this in my pregnancy or is it just too risky?
Thanks, Cecelia

I am currently 16 weeks pregnant with my first child and have had a pretty severe dairy intolerance for most of my life. I have been following the WP protocol, dairy free, for the past 6 years (due to time constraints, I am probably light on the bone broth but I do my best!). When I first read your recommendations of raw milk when I discovered the WAPF, I was so excited as I was hopeful that I would again be able to consume dairy (and that standard, pasteurized dairy was what I was allergic too). Luckily I live in a state where it is not too hard to find Raw milk….but alas, my body still did not like it and I was was plagued with severe headaches, GI issues and low blood sugar/jitters/severe/hunger shortly after consuming it. I had the same, albeit slightly less severe reaction, with raw cheese and butter as well. I have tried reintroducing dairy several times since, hoping that after more time eating a traditional diet as well as being treated by a wonderful naturopath, my body would rid itself of it’s dairy intolerance. But, unfortunately, this hasn’t happened (dairy no longer causes bad GI issues, but the headaches and jitters/hunger persist). So my question is, during pregnancy, what should I supplement/eat more of instead to get the nutrients I would normally get from dairy? I have even tried the GP butter/FCLO blend, and even that seems to be causing a bad reaction (just ordered the plain FCLO).
I am so annoyed that my body hasn’t learned to accept this food…..it seems strange to me as I am of scandinavian and scotch/irish descent (from mostly a long line of farmers on both sides at that) and my ancestors had surely lived on pastured dairy for ages!
tjboyd says
Reply to Lola22 from Sally
We are so sorry to hear about the dairy–you are just one of those unfortunate people who can’t tolerate any kind of dairy.
For calcium, of course bone broths are good. You could also make a “calcium tea” by soaking egg shells in vinegar. Another possible product is the bone product from Dr. Ron’s Ultrapure.
Plenty of green vegetables, always well cooked and with butter, will supply some calcium for you, but you should also include the suggestions above. Almonds are also a good source of calcium.
Sincerely, Sally

Raw Oysters
I am 8 weeks pregnant. Is it OK to consume raw oysters or is this something that is preferred as cooked? I see that raw fish is a not recommended but that brings up confusion with regards to fish eggs. Are those OK to eat raw? I don’t normally see recipes for cooked fish eggs.

Yes i would like to know the answer to this too, i eat about 20 raw oysters a week as i found out im a bit zinc deficient but now im pregnant im not sure if this is a good idea, maybe cooked mussels would be better.

Hi! I have a 6 month old baby and started him recently on solids. I follow the Nourishing Traditions book which includes feeding liver to infants. My son seems to like it and I was okay with it, but my husband has concerns that there are a lot of toxins in organ meets, especially liver, since it is a detoxification organ. I’m now worried if I’m doing the right thing. Should I stop feeding him liver?
Harriet Forrester-Roberts says
Hi Eva, i’m not from the institute but I know that the liver does not store toxins, it stores the nutrients used to process the toxins. Liver is so nutrient dense so you need to get your husband on board!

I was recently advised not to take fermented cod liver oil and high vitamin butter oil during pregnancy, if my diet was not completely WAPF. due to income, and location, it is impossible for us to fully afford or find all the foods we need to be fully WAPF, so we do what we can. Fclo/bo is one of the things we can do, along with pastured butter, yard eggs, and coconut oil. Is taking fclo/bo harmful if your diet isn’t fully WAPF? Please someone from the foundation answer. Thanks.
Melissa says
I’m not from the foundation, but as long as you are consuming high amounts of saturated fats, you will be fine. The worry with FLCO without the full WAPF diet is that it will thin your blood. High amounts of saturated fats counteract that side effect.

If you take an ounce of pea size frozen raw liver every day, would that be all the folate a pregnant person would need for baby?

From Sally – The recommended amount for pregnancy is 600 mcg and there are 215 mcg folate in 3 ounces beef liver. Of course, there is folate in many other foods.

Hi yall- Firstly, I love this site & all the questions & answers. It has already helped me tremendously! :-))))
I have an 11 month old who has been exclusively breast fed from day 1. He has no interest in food whatsoever. 🙁 I’ve given him all different kinds of things to try/play with. He just doesn’t care.
My husband & I would like to have/get pregnant within the next 6 months. – my supply is fine, but baby is needing more, I can tell. I had lots of breast milk in the freezer & it’s now almost gone.
What I am wondering, is due to his age, but his lack of interest in other foods, should I go ahead & prepare the formula for him?
I see from comments & the site info, it is probably ok to give him the raw milk. But bc He will not eat anything else, I feel like I should make the formula until he DOES eat other foods. Silly baby, who doesn’t like to eat food??!! LOL! Oh yah, he doesn’t have any teeth yet… I wonder if that is a factor! But anyways, if anyone/everyone could advise, I’d greatly appreciate it!!
Thanks so much,
Jill

Hi,
Is it ok to keep taking folic acid plus having liver etc or will that be too much folic acid altogether?

Do NOT take folic acid. It is synthetic and it is actually dangerous due to MTHFR being so prevalent. Only take food-form folate or methylfolate if you must.

I have a 4.5 month old who pukes after every single feeding. He’s not showing classic reflux signs other that a little discomfort and the puking but he’s an overall happy boy. He pukes a lot and has actually lost 6 oz. I make raw kefir and drink it daily. Could the raw milk kefir be causing him distress? The only other dairy I do is raw grass fed butter, raw cream and raw cheeses. Should I try cutting out dairy and seeing if it stops his reflux? I’d really hate to give up my kefir but I want him to feel better.

Is there any risk in taking New Chapter prenatals which contain 5000 ui of beta carotene along with eating liver and cod liver oil? Since the foundation states that beta carotene isn’t easily converted to true vitamin A, this shouldn’t be concerning, correct?
Brielle says
I am currently 26 weeks pregnant and have been (somewhat loosely) following the WAPF guidelines for the last year. I have loved it, and feel much healthier than with my other pregnancies, with MUCH less joint pain, etc. But I have been gaining weight much faster as well, which I don’t particularly like. I have gained normally my other two pregnancies (25-30 pounds) and I really don’t have any kind of “fat-phobia” except that I like to look good and feel good, and I’d like to feel like I have a newborn rather than a three-month old when this baby comes! I have already (at 26 weeks) gained about 25 pounds and don’t want to have gained 50 by the end! Is this normal to gain more weight on WAPF or is there anything I should be doing differently that will help slow down the weight gain? I eat lots of raw grassfed butter, raw milk, kefir, kombucha, and pastured/wild meats, and usually a couple of eggs a day as well as a moderate amount of soaked grains–probably not as many veggies as I should, but usually a good-sized salad with olive oil and vinegar dressing every day. I also make chicken stock at least once a week. A couple of days a week I am usually out of the house and have to eat what’s available, which sometimes isn’t the best, though I try to stay away from processed foods still. Thanks for your input!
Heather says
Brielle, I also have found that I pack on the pounds when pregnant and eat the healthy, WAPF way. I am on my 3rd “WAPF pregnancy.” 1st (boy) gained 40 lbs (lots of water weight that I sweat out); 2nd (girl) gained 35 lbs (lost a few lbs 1st trimester because I was so sick); 3rd, I am currently 29 weeks preg and already gained 42 lbs! I started this 3rd preg at my original pre-preg weight of 130. Either I’m just a “gainer” or my body wants/needs all this high fat WAPF healthy food! My midwives are not concerned at all with my 42 lb gain. I don’t exercise because of bad iron-def anemia which makes me extremely tired. I just try to walk, bend, and play with the kids. I also do eat dessert a couple times a week, both healthy, homemade and occasionally junk food out.

Is it safe to eat raw egg yolk or raw eggs while pregnant?
Harriet Forrester-Roberts says
I’m not from the institute but i read in sally’s book that raw egg whites are hard to digest so i would stick to raw egg yolks, you need to trust the source (as with anything you eat raw). Personally i love a raw egg yolk mixed in raw milk with some nutmeg for breakfast but i only do this with eggs that are salmonella free (i.e. vaccinated against it). I also stay clear of duck eggs as ducks are salmonella on two legs! My Mum got salmonella from eating raw cake mixture with a raw duck egg in it!

Woouu!! so many new things for me. I wanted to say that I am 9 weeks pregnant and I am pregnant with momo twins. One of my doctors has given me some pills with folic acid, iodine and vitamin B12. Another doctor wanted to give me some more complete pills, with more vitamins, calcium, etc. But my midwife recommended that I consume the vitamins directly from the foods and she also told me that she did not consider that I needed folic acid and that iodine could be obtained by consuming salt, but in my case she did not want to tell me not to take anything but that if I take it I should consume the most basic pills of the two recommendations of the doctors. So I started taking the pills with more basic component, but now your answer about the synthetic vitamins and that we can get the folic acid in leafy greens has left me with the doubt. Should I stop taking the pills? I want to do the best for my babies, especially be careful about my type of pregnancy. Thank you!!

It is my understanding that it is possible to overdose on vitamin A. (early arctic explorers died by eating raw fish liver). My concern is that our son (to be born in one month) may get too much vitamin A. I heard somewhere that it is perfectly safe to use beta-carotene instead because the body produces vitamin A from beta-carotene, but only produces as much as it needs, so that overdosing is impossible. Your thoughts on this please.
Tim Boyd says
Too much vitamin A alone is toxic when not balanced with vitamin D, which is why we recommend certain cod liver oils that are properly balanced. Beta carotene is converted to vitamin A very inefficiently and not at all by babies. Please don’t give your baby beta carotene.
Harriet Forrester-Roberts says
I’m from the UK, how do I know which is the best cod liver oil to take? There are so many on the market and the ones that Sally recommends are US companies.
Lucy Smith says
I buy Rosita cod liver oil, which is sold online in various places in the UK. I just choose whichever is cheapest at at the time (it is quite pricey!). Chris Kresser recommends this brand (see https://chriskresser.com/important-update-on-cod-liver-oil/). It is well tested for purity.
It’s not fermented but then there’s a whole load of debate on what fermented cod liver oil actually is (e.g. is it just oxidised? WAPF would say a definite no to this, but I think it’s hard to know for sure — see https://chrismasterjohnphd.substack.com/p/weighing-in-on-the-fermented-cod-14d). WAPF recommends Green Pasture fermented cod liver oil, and this does seem to be available in the UK (just had a google to check), so you could also buy that, depending on what you judge after reading up on the queries around fermented CLO. I’ve also just discovered that WAPF also recommends Rosita CLO 🙂

Hello there. Is it safe/advisable for pregnant woman to use your fermented cod liver oil gel (topical use only) on a decayed tooth? I have read about the wonderful benefits to help repair tooth enamel and repair cavities, but have concerns re: the Vitamin A content, and if this application is considered safe for a pregnant woman? If the cavity is large and close to the tooth nerve (causing sensitivity and some discomfort) would it be advisable? Thank you!
Brandi says
Emily, I am not versed in the use of FCLO for dental issues (though I have of course heard that it is helpful), but if you take a glance through many of the articles about diet during pregnancy on this site you will find that FCLO comes highly recommended for expectant mothers. So you should be totally fine using it during pregnancy, as long as you don’t exceed the recommended two teaspoons for pregnant women daily. If at all possible I would suggest you get in touch with a local biological dentist who could help you to find the best solution, since your cavity is so far advanced.
I hope your pregnancy (and dental issues) have been doing well!

Hello i am 25 weeks pregnant at 32 and have hyperemesis (severe morning sickness) which ive had most of my pregnancy. Essentially I have not been able to keep food or water down to the point of being hospitalized. I ate the WAP way for about a year before getting pregnant, which balanced my hormones & is likely why I was able to get pregnant. So I am confused why this is happening but it happened to my sister as well. I am currently on the lowest dosage of zofran and I hate being on a pill at all. I waited to take it for as long as possible and tried all the recommendations in this article first as well as other, less severe, drug therapies. I was sent some info on IG from WAP but the message content was deleted, not by me. In that message ox bile and bile salts were recommended to me and currently I am trying to wean myself off medication and take these instead. I cant find anything on safety during pregnancy online. For the LIFE of me I cannot find the original article that was sent to me by the WAP team and am confused as to why the IG direct message was deleted. Can someone help?
Tim Boyd says
From Sally:
This sounds just terrible!
Many moms have found that sipping raw milk throughout the day calms morning sickness. There are also homeopathic remedies (such as nux vomica)
Taking an ox bile tablet with meals sometimes helps
My own theory is that the body is making a lot of estrogen and other hormones for the baby and does not have enough cholesterol left over to make bile salts for digesting fats–hence the constant nausea. The whole thing is a vicious circle, because you need the fats for cholesterol, but you can’t digest the fats. Anyway, taking an ox bile tablet with meals should be helpful.
Sincerely, Sally
