What is 5G?
According to the Federal Communications Commission, 5G is the fifth generation of mobile technology, with greater capacity for a more efficient and flexible network to support future services and applications. 5G promises faster data rates and lower latency, or delays, in data transmission[1] and is evolved from previous generations of 2G, 3G and 4G. All of these networks produce radio-frequency electromagnetic fields (EMF) which are used to transmit information, with no valid scientific studies on the long-term health effects from exposure.
Why are we concerned about 5G?
5G is a form of electromagnetic radiation, and there have been no adequate health studies done on 5G and its effects on the human population or the environment. Electromagnetic fields (EMFs) are generated from electrical devices, such as smartphones, iPads, tablets, cell towers and Wi-Fi. Many children are exposed to EMFs at school as well as in most public places. 5G cell towers are even being placed outside of schools on football fields, on top of office buildings, and on hotels. The World Health Organization classified EMFs as “possibly carcinogenic to humans,” and according to Children’s Health Defense (CHD), “research has shown EMF overexposure can include symptoms such as chronic headaches, fatigue, trouble sleeping, ringing in the ears, rashes/hives, and feeling stressed or wired.”
As more scientific literature on EMF’s gets published, the risks 5G poses to human health, environment and privacy/security are becoming more prevalent.
According to scientific literature published in 2022, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) have reaffirmed exposure limits from 2020 which are based on false speculation that do not protect the general population from short-term or long-term RFR exposures:[2]
“Multiple human studies have found statistically significant associations between radiofrequency radiation (RFR) exposure and increased brain and thyroid cancer risk. Consequently, these exposure limits, which are based on false suppositions, do not adequately protect workers, children, hypersensitive individuals, and the general population from short-term or long-term RFR exposures. Thus, urgently needed are health protective exposure limits for humans and the environment. These limits must be based on scientific evidence rather than on erroneous assumptions, especially given the increasing worldwide exposures of people and the environment to RFR, including novel forms of radiation from 5G telecommunications for which there are no adequate health effects studies. And according to numerous scientists in the field, the assumption that 5G technologies are safe is not an evidence-based conclusion[4], and surely not one that the federal government should be relying on to carry out this mass technological upgrade before the necessary research has been done.
What can we do about it?
According to the Environmental Health Trust, there are currently no national or international “standards” for safe levels of radiation emitted by wireless or microwave devices. While this should raise concern, the FCC is still carrying out a comprehensive strategy to Facilitate America’s Superiority in 5G Technology, known as the 5G Fast Act Plan, and any lawsuits, negative press, or lobbying to stop this have quickly been demolished. To make matters worse, in 2022, The Department of Defense further solidified this plan with the “establishment of a 5G and FutureG cross-functional team that would accelerate the adoption of transformative 5G and future generation wireless networking technologies to ensure its forces can operate effectively anywhere.” While many of these updates are out of our control, we’ve provided some links below to help put an end to the 5G rollout and make our voices heard:

What organizations do we recommend for additional information?
Below are some nonprofits that WAPF recommends to help you learn more about the risks associated with 5G and current 5G policy.
National Call for Safe Technology - The National Call for Safe Technology is a rallying cry for better wireless device safety testing, up-to-date Wi-Fi exposure guidelines, homeowner rights to refuse "smart" meters, ADA accommodations for individuals impacted by electromagnetic sensitivity, and wired as the default internet connection.
Children’s Health Defense - CHD has long been a pioneer in the fight against Big Tech and a mission to end childhood health epidemics by working aggressively to eliminate harmful exposures, hold those responsible accountable, and establish safeguards to prevent future harm.
Environmental Health Trust - Environmental Health Trust (EHT) is a think tank and the only nonprofit organization in the world that carries out cutting-edge research on environmental health hazards and works directly with communities, health and education professionals, and policymakers to understand and mitigate these hazards.
Physicians for Safe Technology - Physicians for Safe Technology supports efforts to advance safer development and use of digital and wireless technologies. PST supports safer and more cyber secure alternatives that are wired both in our streets and in our homes, businesses and schools. PST also supports adequate safety testing prior to the introduction of new technologies and robust monitoring after placement of cell towers. PST strongly advocates for local control of cell tower placement with careful consideration of non-thermal human health and environmental health effects. PST also strongly urges meaningful health and environmental surveys before placing cell towers, wireless infrastructure in buildings or generally increasing wireless radiofrequency radiation in the environment.
