IN THE NEWS
RAW MILK VICTORY IN NEW HAMPSHIRE
HB 1402 (2012), the proposed bill to allow for direct sales of raw milk products without a milk-producer-distributor license for certain small scale dairy producer-distributors in New Hampshire, was signed by the governor this past week. After having been passed by the NH House, the bill went to the Senate, where it passed without any further opposition by the FDA or any other party.
This result would not have been obtained without the Weston A. Price Foundation’s rebuttal to the testimony of John Sheehan of the FDA that was filed in early March. You can access the document here: http://www.realmilk.com/wp-content/uploads/2000/01/ResponsetoJohnSheehanTestimony.pdf
RAW MILK VENDING MACHINE
The first raw milk vending machine is selling 200 litres of real milk every day in a tiny settlement in Golden Bay. The owners want to expand throughout New Zealand. CHAPTERS
We have 573 chapters worldwide. These volunteers are generously and diligently working to help people in their area find nutrient-dense foods. Some chapter leaders also choose to host meetings. If you have a farm food or artisan food product they should know about, please contact your Local Chapter Leader. If you are looking for foods or want to see whether there are meetings in your area, please see the list of Local Chapters on our website and in our journal.
If you don’t see one in your area, check again later, we are getting new chapters weekly, or consider offering to be a Chapter Leader yourself. Besides being a member and submitting a short annual report, your only obligation is to provide a list of food sources for those who contact you. Meetings are appreciated but are optional.

People who are allergic to soy may also react to eggs, dairy and flesh foods. This is usually chalked up to multiple allergies, but the cause might well be soy residues from the soy-based chows fed to poultry, cows, sheep and fish. In her latest blog “The Soy-ling of America: Second-hand Soy in Animal Foods,” Dr. Kaayla Daniel looks at evidence proving soy isoflavones end up in egg yolks, organs and muscle meats.

The Maasai, an Interlude — What Does All This Sociocultural and Historical Stuff Have to Do With Heart Disease?

In this post, Chris explains why we need to understand the culture and history of the Maasai in order to understand their freedom of heart disease. Using illustrative examples from debates between the research teams of George Mann, Bruce Taylor, and Jose Day, he shows how issues of spirituality, social organization, interactions with governments, and many other issues may impact both the risk of heart disease independently of diet and the Maasai diet itself.

QUESTIONS ANSWERED
Q. What is the difference between the principle trans fat “elaidic acid” found in hydrogenated oils and the “elaidic acid” found in meat? Your web site claims that trans fats are extremely harmful to the body yet meat, which is one of the health foods you promote, contains the same trans fats chemically identical to the ones found in hydrogenated oils. Can you explain this?
A. Hydrogenated oils contain a whole range of trans fats, the vast majority harmful to the body. Butter and meat fats contain only one trans fat, trans-vaccenic acid, which the body turns into CLA, a beneficial substance.
Q. My mother has a feeding tube and I cringe to see what they are giving her. What are other options?
A. We are not experts on this question. A good option is raw milk. For further information visit http://lucysrealfood.com/basic%20instructions.htm
Q. Why does the infant formulas include lots of vegetable oils like sunflower and olive oil? These are very high in linoleic acid.
A. Answer from Chris Masterjohn. The amount of sunflower oil and olive oil in the infant formula recipe provides the amount of unsaturated fatty acids found in the milk of modern American mothers. I have found compelling evidence that arachidonic acid and DHA are necessary for infant development, but not linoleic acid. That said, linoleic acid serves as a precursor for arachidonic acid, so I think the formula should have some linoleic acid (mainly from the sunflower oil). However, it is likely that current linoleic acid levels in breast milk are higher than they otherwise would be, not because they are needed, but because they are present in excess as a result of the consumption of vegetable oils. So I think the amount of linoleic acid in the formula should be normalized to pre-1960 data for Americans, or, better, if they are available, to data from breast milk concentrations of mothers from traditionally living populations that had not yet encountered dietary vegetable oils at the time the data were collected. This would mean reducing the amount of sunflower oil by half.
Q. Nitrates: It is confusing that WAPF has always advised against using meats cured with nitrates but then they highlighted an article about bacon by The Naughty Nutritionist which contradicts that advice.
A. Answer from Kaayla Daniel, PhD We are learning! And the article exposes the myth that the celery salt-cured bacons found at Whole Foods are nitrite free. They are not. It appears the old fashioned method may be preferable for all the reasons discussed in the article. And nitrites in the presence of Vitamin C do not convert in the body to nitrosamines.
Given the fact that hardly any true, old-fashioned traditionally made bacon from pastured pigs is available, we will continue to recommend bacons such as Applegate etc in our Shopping Guide as “good” because they are preferable to regular commercial supermarket bacon. However, regardless of what it says on the label, “no added nitrites” does not mean nitrite free. Indeed the nitrite content could be quite high.
