Lydia Grace Finch must leave her country life and go to live with her cantankerous Uncle Jim, who owns and lives above a bakery in the big city. Bringing seeds and a love of gardening, Lydia Grace slowly begins to soften the heart of her grumpy uncle by beautifying his city apartment with a rooftop garden. During her stay, she also learns the art of baking and the satisfaction of interacting with customers. The final product of Lydia Grace’s garden is both breathtaking and heartwarming due to the transformation of her uncle. Sarah Stewart writes this book using the unique epistolary format of letters back and forth between Lydia Grace and her family back home, which keeps the reader guessing how the story will turn out.
