Buy Local Meat to Ensure Food Safety, Advises Nutrition Foundation
Washington, D.C., October 6, 2009—A New York Times exposé on the food handling practices of large meat producers has created the impression that consumers need to avoid ground beef in order to avoid serious illness. The October 4 article (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/04/health/04meat.html), describes shocking unsanitary practices among the nation’s large meat producers.
“Ground beef is a nutritious food with many culinary uses,” says Sally Fallon Morell, president of the Weston A. Price Foundation (WAPF), a non-profit nutrition education foundation with 400 chapters worldwide. “Consumers do not need remove ground beef from their diet in order to achieve food safety in their home kitchen. But they do need to purchase their meat directly from local farmers engaged in small scale grass based farming.” Research continues to show that beef raised on grass is much less likely to harbor pathogenic e. coli organisms; and local small scale processing minimizes the risk of contamination. “Grass-fed cattle, free to roam on pasture rather than confined to a feedlot, produce highly nutritious beef, without the risks.”
The Foundation’s volunteer chapter leaders are local food activists, nutritionists, small farmers and other health practitioners who can provide a list of local food resources.
Consumers can contact their local chapter, or even start a local chapter in their area, by contacting the Weston A. Price Foundation, http://www.westonaprice.org/chapters/ or by phone, (202) 363-4394.
