Dear Fellow Weston A. Price Members and Friends,
I am writing this now because I want to make you aware that we are in need of your support. Right now, it is very late into the CSA planting season. We already have many plants growing and there are many more seeded, ready to be put in the ground. What we need, however, are shareholders and families who will eat these delicious and highly nutritious vegetables that we are producing. This past year, we encountered some difficulties that set us back a bit. We have been farming on leased land for more than ten years. We have cared for the land as if it was our own, each year adding more and more features to the land (greenhouse, well, soil building, electricity) but without any warning, our landlord declared bankruptcy and the land went into foreclosure. We were left in a very difficult situation and, as renters, we had no rights. We struggled through the season and completed our commitment to our shareholders (and in fact had a very bounteous season!) but we were uncertain where we stood for the future. Since our future with the land was unknown, we were reluctant to advertise the CSA for this season or to allow any of our repeat shareholders to buy a share. The good news is that, with the help of lawyer Pete Kennedy, everything has turned around. We have a new landlord who is very supportive and we now feel confident about our future as CSA farmers again. But, we still have many shares available. We are appealing to you because WAPF members are people who know the value and healing power of delicious, nutrient dense, GMO and pesticide free, produce. And we are hoping you will be interested in supporting our CSA.
If CSA is not for you, or if you have already joined another CSA for the coming season, there is another way that you can help out. Last year some of our CSA members bought a share for themselves AND they bought a share that was donated to a needy family in the DC metropolitan area. We felt that this was an incredible idea because it created a situation where everyone benefited in a big way. The person buying the share not only felt good about directly helping families get fresh, nutrient-dense food but they were also able to use the price of their donated share as a tax write-off. The CSA was benefited because we were able to continue our work knowing that the food we were growing was going to people who were excited to be receiving it and also benefited greatly by having fresh, clean food. And finally, of course, the families very obviously benefited. Each week they received a bag of fresh, delicious produce and pastured eggs.
We are hoping that as a WAPF member you will either join our CSA this season or you will consider donating a share to a family in your area. We have many different drop off sites in the MD, VA, WV and DC areas if you would like to purchase a share for your family. If you are just considering donating a share to a low income family, Fresh and Local does this through AFAC in Arlington, VA. You can purchase a share from us and we will work with them to provide a family with a CSA share for the season. The family (or AFAC on their behalf) will be able to pick up their vegetables along with the other CSA members at our Arlington drop site.
If this is something that you would like to do, please either contact us at info@freshandlocalcsa.com, allan.balliett@gmail.com or call us at 304 876-3382. You can also send a check for $600 for a share to P. O. Box 3047, Shepherdstown, WV 25443. Please specify whether this is a donation or if this is for your own family. Your support will affect so many people in a positive way. Not only will our farm benefit but so will our interns and farm workers. Last year we received letters of appreciation for the food from many of the participants who received donated shares. This is a plan that works and works well. Thank you so much for your support.
Our bodies evolved when the earth’s soils were rich with minerals, highly fertile with primordially complex soil food webs. Our bodies came to rely on many nutritional substances created external to them, many of them by plants. Today, our bodies expect access to those same array of nutrients. If we don’t receive them, we exhibit diseases of deficiencies. Many of these substances can only be produced by plants growing in truly living soils, soils with all necessary minerals present in appropriate ratios and a complex soil food web to make the minerals available to the plants. Foods of this quality are not often produced by commercial growers, be they chemical or USDA organic. It takes special care and knowledge and the amount of work that only comes from love, for the earth and for those who eat from her. CSAs are not expensive. They are cheaper by-the-pound than farmers markets and their foods are fresher. Also, getting a weekly share delivered to your neighborhood saves you a lot of time over going to the farmers market every week.
You can order your share or a donated share here.
Looking forward to growing for you and with you this season!
If you cannot buy or donate a CSA share this season, can we ask you to please take the time to “like” us on Facebook? www.facebook.com/FreshAndLocalCSA
I would be grateful if you could send this along to your friends and family who may not be WAPF members.
Thank you
