An Ancestral Perspective on Vitamin D Status, Part 2: Why Low 25(OH)D Could Indicate a Deficiency of Calcium Instead of Vitamin D
In the second installment of this ongoing series about how we can improve our interpretation of blood tests for vitamin D status, Chris begins explaining why the very idea of using 25(OH)D in and of itself to determine vitamin D status is problematic. 25(OH)D is consistently used as if it were a specific marker of vitamin D status, but it is not. This series will cover numerous other explanations for low 25(OH)D besides poor vitamin D nutrition. In this post, Chris begins by explaining why calcium deficiency can cause low 25(OH)D, even in the presence of adequate vitamin D.
