Regrettably, we have bad news to report on vaccination medical exemptions in California.
Despite the strong grassroots opposition, Governor Newsom signed both S.B. 276 and S.B 714 into law on September 9, 2019.
As you may know, back in 2015, the California Legislature took away parental rights to philosophical and religious vaccine exemptions for children attending public or private school – but left the medical exemptions.
Now, S.B. 276/ S.B. 714 modifies the California medical exemption statute, making it far more difficult to obtain a medical exemption to allow your child to attend school or day care without being vaccinated.
We understand that many parents have questions regarding the implications of S.B. 276/S.B. 714. Our friends at A Voice For Choice Advocacy have provided an initial analysis: http://avoiceforchoiceadvocacy.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/AVFCA-SB276-Implications-for-your-child.pdf As they note, there are several grey areas, but their analysis will help parents to better understand what their options are for this school year, and for upcoming school years.
Thank you to everyone who took action to fight these bills. Even though we lost, your efforts were not wasted – you convinced many legislators to vote against the bills and laid the groundwork to keep up the fight. Please stay tuned, we will keep our members posted on any possible actions to overturn the new vaccine law.
In the meantime, we here at The Weston A. Price Foundation stand in solidarity with those families whose lives are gravely affected by these terrible bills.
