In September 2023, you may have received an email action alert from WAPF, titled “Tell Whole Foods to Keep Homeopathic Medicines on their Shelves!” You may have jumped into action to make your voice heard that these remedies are an essential part of our well-being, or you may have hesitated because you were not familiar with homeopathy to begin with.
If you are new to homeopathy and interested in learning more, this brief guide is a great place to start. As a student practitioner of homeopathy working toward certification, author Priscilla Medders understands and addresses the basic questions that many people ask at the beginning of their journey with homeopathy.
The word homeopathy means “similar” (homeo) “suffering” (pathy). Although this book isn’t meant to provide an in-depth exploration of the scientific basis of homeopathy, it does unpack some core concepts to get started, including the law of similars—“Let like cure like” (Similia similibus curentur)—as well as the law of minimum dose and the principles of dilution and potentization that guide the preparation of homeopathic remedies. Medders also outlines the difference between acute and chronic illness to help you know when to confidently prescribe a remedy on your own and when to call a homeopath.
To identify the correct remedy in homeopathy, Medders explains, you must get away from the allopathic, one-size-fits-all approach—or the mentality that “X condition equals Y remedy.” Instead, to match the proper remedy, she advises using the acronym CLAMS to remember to assess “Concomitants” (other symptoms), “Location” (where in the body the ailment is located), “Aetiology” (how the ailment began), “Modalities” (what makes the body feel better) and “Sensations” (feelings in the body).
If you want a guide to get started with homeopathy, Medders’s book will equip you with exactly what you need. The last chapter includes a thoughtfully curated list with more resources, including where to find a homeopath, low-cost online homeopathic clinics, homeopathy kits (such as the Helios 36-remedy kit designed by Mary Aspinwall), homeopathic pharmacies, books (for example, Miranda Castro’s The Complete Homeopathy Handbook), online resources for home prescribers and more. This practical, quick and simple-to-use reference deserves an enthusiastic thumbs up!
