What if outer space is not a void, but instead has substance, an “aether” that has healing properties that may be of tremendous benefit to us? Dr. James DeMeo makes a compelling case for this perspective based on his decades of research and the work of Dr. Wilhelm Reich. He explains how the energy heals, what we are doing that is compromising its protective properties and what we can do to tap into it to reap its benefits.

.What if space isn’t a cold empty void but rather contains an energetic field that can bring healing? This is Episode 327 and our guest is Dr. James DeMeo. James earned his PhD in the field of Geography specializing in Earth and Atmospheric Science. He is the author or editor of nine books and around 100 published research papers. He brings to our attention this controversial opinion about space because it merits examination.
In this episode, James discusses the history of scientists like Nikola Tesla, who believed in a substance they referred to as ether and how this substance can be harnessed to improve our health and ways in which common modern technologies are limiting these healing benefits. This is the third in our Out There series because it is literally about space, a topic we have never broached on this show. Although some people may find this perspective challenging, we consider it worthy of your attention so we’re putting it out there regardless. Before we get into the conversation, a quick shout out to our sponsors.

Welcome to the show, James.
Thank you for the invitation.
I’m excited to talk with you about the ether because this literally is a very different subject for this show. I want you to help us unpack why it matters. For example, I know for decades, our understanding of space was that it had substance and then it changed. The scientific consensus was at space is void but now it’s flipping back around. Help us understand that.
It has a long history. If you go back to the 1700s or 1600, all of the major astronomers including Galileo and Kepler and the thinkers of the day, all accepted the idea of ether for the simple reason that the wave theory of light was very well known and documented. If you have a mirror, waves can be reflected against a mirror. Light can be refracted, reflected and all kinds of things can be done with light very much similar to what we see with water waves in a pond or with sound waves, too. The idea was, if you have a wave phenomenon like light, which brings light from the stars and from the sundown to us, there must be some medium, other than air itself, that transmits the light.
Waves in a medium were the starting point and it was called ether. This is something that was tested experimentally, in the early 1800s, using some of the most sophisticated methods of that day, which are still employed in optical theory in research. A device called the interferometer. It’s a little complex to explain but it’s a device that allows you to track the relative speed of light as it goes in different directions. At least, in theory, they made these large interferometers which were big instruments that were maybe 5 or 10 meters in width. They would shine a light beam up and down them and in one direction and shine a light beam up and down in another direction and compare the speed of those light beams based upon how they interfered with each other when you recombine them.
You would get these what they call interference fringes that would shift to the left or the right, depending upon the variable speed of the ether. The findings were expected to be a calculation of hundreds of kilometers per second differences. The differences that were actually measured were on the order of 5 to 10 kilometers per second. They did not confirm what they expected the amount to be but nevertheless, the smaller number was still significant.
Around the time when these experiments were being thrashed out and debated. Einstein’s theory of relativity came along which postulated light speed constancy in space in all directions and basically did not require a medium because he postulated curved space-time. It gets a little complex on that, too. The point is that Einstein captivated the imagination of Physics of that time period in the early 1900s. The debate about the ether and the ether drift and the varying speed of ether faded into the background.
What we had was American researchers stayed with the ether the longest and most notably a scientist named Dayton Miller, who detected the ether repeatedly and at the highest levels by going up high on a mountain. His idea was, if you were closer to outer space, the speed would be greater and he proved that was so. Meanwhile, Einstein had captivated the European imagination mostly, so the Europeans took up Einstein, early and strongly. American Science was viewed as Podunk, backwater, colonial nonsense. There’s no other way to put it.
Back in those years, we weren’t members of the Royal Society, put it that way. We have no kings and queens and no hobnobbing royalty to speak of. This attitude permeated the sciences on different sides of the Atlantic. Einstein wound up winning the day on the debate, even though Dayton Miller and a number of others have the data. Einstein was clear that you could not have any kind of medium in space. Space was empty. The universe was dead and it put a brake on the imagination of people on how and what might be possible in terms of scientific discovery or exploration in space.

One of your questions was, “What does it really matter?” It’s like a fish asking, “What does the water matter?” They deny the existence of water. We’re like fish who say, “There is no water and we’re just floating around in empty pits, empty basins rather than in a real water ocean.” If you look at it that way then suddenly, you have nothing you can do with it. You can’t touch it, manipulate it, grab it or experimentally explore it. Ether, on the other hand, gives all kinds of potentials for experiment and study.
For the average person reading, we don’t want to be the fish mindlessly unaware of the water we’re swimming in so to speak but what difference does it make to us if there is something of substance versus a void emptiness?
Let me go back to another scientist, Nikola Tesla. A lot of people know that he was a believer in the ether. Who was Tesla? He’s the guy who invented the alternating current motors and generators for the transmission of electricity that run our modern world. Edison invented things that ran off of electricity but it was Tesla who made electricity practical and usable for the whole world. He’s relegated to a backseat in Science because he was a strong advocate of the ether. He thought Einstein’s theory was bunk and he said so many times.
The difference is, for example, Tesla was trying to pull energy out of the ether space. He was trying to tap the ether to get electrical power. Some say he did it. He said he was very close to doing it in an experimental context but if space is purely empty and void and there’s nothing in it other than a few random particles bouncing around, you’ll never be able to tap energy out of it. If it’s a contiguous energetic phenomenon, a continuum of energy then you can tap it at one point and it’ll suck energy from all of its surroundings to that point.
You have, with that, the theoretical possibility of getting an energy free from this from the background of space, what is popularly called zero-point energy and you also have the potential to latch on to it with a spaceship that could be propelled by the ether itself. The limitations of Einstein is, nothing can go faster than the speed of light but with ether in space, that’s no longer a limitation. All the limitations in Science and Physics drop away with ether that is inhibited by the theory of Einstein and empty space.
This is not just in terms of Physics and Astronomy or something like that. It has to do with things like medicine. How many people have talked about life energy for generations, for eons of time? Every culture had a theory about life energy. For the Native Americans, the term Wakan Tanka was a phrase for the Great Spirit. American western christians misinterpreted that of being the Great Spirit. For the Native Americans, it had a more literal translation, meaning the force that moves all things. This gets close to the ether because with ether being tangible and substantive, it becomes the primary candidate for moving the planets around in their orbits. Hence, if you can tap it, you can have it move your spaceship around in that sea of energy.
Maybe it changes not only the possibilities of where energy comes from and what kind of energy is around us but it may even change our understanding of who we are as energetic beings, right?
Absolutely. What I found fascinating is that some of the more adept scientists who documented the existence of life energy such as Dr. Wilhelm Reich talked about the ether. He said, “The dropping and the abandonment of the ether was a catastrophe for science,” because he had discovered something called the orgone energy with very clear and solid experiments. This energy was a continuum of energy. It was something that existed in the atmosphere as well as charging up our bodies, charging up food, the soils and the minerals of the earth. Everything was charged with this life energy which gave the appearance of being similar to the old early twentieth-century ether.
That brings it into focus into biology and biochemistry of giving us another avenue for understanding our health, for new processes of healing. In America, we have a long tradition of life energetic phenomenon. If you look at Hahnemann and Mesmer, not just in the United States but in Europe too. The work of Hahnemann in homeopathy, the work of Mesmer with his animal magnetism. They’re all talking about energy and with Reich it was Charcot who had studied with Mesmer. This French scientist Charcot was the trainer of Sigmund Freud, who developed this idea of libido, the energy of emotions and of biology.
It became a metaphor for the Freudians and they didn’t do much with it but Wilhelm Reich was a Freudian and he studied the libido and was the first one to hook up electrometers to people’s skin surface to document changes in the skin surface potential based upon emotional experience. That was the beginning of a long experimental road for Reich to document life energy but it’s connected deeply with this concept of ether.
Can you explain more about the orgone energy and how does science see that?
If I can draw back to Dayton Miller, he was defeated in his research basically by being ignored. All of his data and findings were simply ignored and erased from existence from the history of science. You won’t find his name in most Science history books. He was just erased and disappeared. Reich was similarly mistreated but worse. His books irritated the scientific elite of Europe. He had to run away from Europe because, at the time when the Nazis came to power, he had been put on the death list of the Nazis. He was put on the death list of the Communist Party. He had been banned from the psychoanalytic establishment, which was trying to get along with the Nazis.
Reich was an anti-Nazi. For a while, he was a communist but then later became a strong anticommunist. He arrives in the USA around that time. He’s got a whole bunch of people that don’t like him for political reasons and he starts doing his research on bioenergy and orgone energy in the United States. Eventually, runs afoul of the American medical establishment due to his invention of this thing called the orgone energy accumulator.
Reich was not only finding that there was life energy in people and in the atmosphere but he proved that it existed in high-vacuum tubes, meaning that it likely existed in open space as well. He developed a device called the orgone accumulator which could attract this energy out of the atmosphere and into a box-like structure composed of special materials. That structure would build up a charge of life energy inside of itself that would be higher than in the open atmosphere.
I read this stuff when I was a graduate student at the University and became so fascinated with it. I began doing research and experiments which validated what Reich showed. I have orgone energy accumulators that I’ve built and if you sit in them, you get a feeling around you that’s very much like if you walked into a redwood forest on the West Coast on a dry day. These huge trees, people talk about tree-hugging, either in a mystical way or in a ridicule way but if you rest yourself, you don’t have to hug it, next to one of these trees, you will feel this radiant strong energy that comes off of it. That’s what you feel inside of the orgone accumulator.
It generates a higher charge of the life energy that’s in the atmosphere into itself and from this comes a boost in your immune system. It can heal wounds faster than normal. If you have a severe burn, it will heal faster. There’re all kinds of clinical research done by Reich and his associates. He had a whole large group of trained doctors and health practitioners who were applying this for all kinds of maladies and diseases. It seemed to work at the root, at the basic level of biology to the point where it almost seemed like a miracle for so many things.
It was on that basis that he was attacked in the medical journals. The Journal of the American Medical Association, Menninger Clinic Journal and a couple of others ridiculed him and called him a quack. He was attacked in the communist press course. Of course, there was no Nazi press at the time worth anything. The communists had been running the New Republic magazine and the Nation magazine. They still run a number of magazines today, those same ones and others. Their influence was large and strong.
They didn’t openly embrace Stalinism but they basically were Stalinist. They created a malicious and dirty-minded view of Reich because he was somebody who was known for his work on the biological effects of sexual dysfunction or how sexual dysfunction came about. He was one of the early sex researchers. They slandered him and said he had a sex cult and things like this. There was no truth to it.

That was almost the excuse they used for dismissing his research. I imagine the AMA and others were rather scornful of what he was doing and such because it posed a threat to conventional medicine and conventional ideas.
That’s exactly so. An orgone accumulator, when I say they’re made of special materials, you can go to the local hardware store and get most of them. You could build an orgone accumulator if you have skills in carpentry for a couple of $100. There are a few places that will sell them for a few $1,000 because there’s a lot of labor involved.
Once you have it, one of the studies that I always wanted to see done was where you took 100 or 200 families and one group got the orgone accumulator that they could sit in occasionally and charge themselves up and the other group did not. You then follow them for some years and you see what’s going on with their health. There are all kinds of things that the orgone accumulator can boost people.
When you talk about immune system dysfunctions, you’re talking about the bioenergetic charge on the red blood cells. That was something that Reich discovered. Red blood cells, if you look at them in the living state under the microscope, they have a blue energy field surrounding them. The strength of that blue energy field is a function of the resistance to disease as they called it back then or the orgone energy charge as Reich called it.
Reich felt the orgone energy had a specific blue color. He felt that it surrounded the Earth in an envelope which gave rise to the blue energy field of the Earth. This was way before the astronauts or satellites went up to take pictures of this. Many things that he identified in terms of cosmology and the energy charge of the Earth and living creatures have been validated in so many ways. I wrote some books on this subject.
I have one book called The Orgone Accumulator Handbook, which not only introduces Reich’s discoveries in detail. It talks a little bit about the ether. There’s an appendix document about the ether in space that talks about Dayton Miller and all that. It also tells you how to build them. This book is sold all over the world and in a couple of languages now. I’m happy to say that there’s a lot of people who know about this now, not only from Reich’s writings but also from my writings. It’s entering into the thinking process of a lot of medical doctors who previously had no idea.
The public who knows talks about life energy, when you look at all the non-conventional healing modalities that talk about laying of hands or the therapeutic touch, there is something just from the direct pressure and touching of people but there’s also bioenergy that’s being transmitted. It’s important to realize that this is not some purely metaphysical concept. It may be metaphysical in the old Eastern traditions but following in the Western traditions, it’s more nuts and bolts. We know it as a tangible force, you can measure it. We have, from Reich, a life energy meter that allows you to measure it. It can be studied with the orgone accumulator. There are all kinds of physical properties inside the space of an orgone accumulator that you can measure with physics instruments and show that there’s something rather unusual going on inside of it.
James, those who believe that space is still void, a bunch of nothingness with some random particles moving around, what do those who espouse those beliefs make of the orgone accumulator information and studies that you and others have done?
They will try to misbrand it as medical quackery. They will try to destroy people who have this viewpoint. When I say destroy, a few years ago, a good friend of mine who’s a Physics teacher in the universities in Europe, he didn’t have a PhD. He went for his PhD. One of his PhD thesis he presented was a reconsideration of Einstein on the basis of the new ether discoveries. When I say new, there are many scientists within my generation and today who have made their own experiments and came to a positive conclusion about it. He cited my book.
I have a new book, it’s titled The Dynamic Ether of Cosmic Space: Correcting a Major Error in Modern Science. This book, which is substantially cited with many pictures and graphs of all of this evidence for the cosmic ether is causing these physics and astrophysics people sheer nightmares. They go after any of their own ilk who dare transgress in this direction with such malicious hatred and political persecution. You would think we’re back in the Middle Ages persecuting witches.
My friend who presented this thesis, they told him, “You’re never going to get a PhD.” They allowed him to finish up his master’s degree but only if he changed his thesis to support Einstein. He was forced to do that just to get out with his neck intact. I know another graduate student who had a similar experience. They just threw him straight out of the university. If you’re a young scientist and you bring these ideas into the university, by my experience, my generation and maybe the modern generation too, maybe there are changes I don’t know about. If you tried to talk about this in the university, you become branded as a heretic and they throw you out or they just maliciously destroy your career.
This sounds familiar to me because I feel like the scientific method is in jeopardy because anyone who has a different thought about a question that challenges mainstream scientific thought is often ostracized. It’s like there’s a witch hunt for any doctor who dares to question the status quo.
Yeah, this COVID especially. I wrote another book on the COVID about the flaws and errors in that. You don’t have to be a doctor or a medical scientist to study the COVID theory and see all the different flaws and errors in it. My background and training were in geography with a specialization in Earth and atmospheric science. People ask me, “What the hell is an atmospheric scientist doing analyzing COVID?” I say, “It’s a scientific method. I know more about the scientific method and analyzing large databases than most every doctor you’ll ever meet.”
Medical doctors are not trained in scientific analysis. They’re trained in memorization and regurgitation of standard practice. You don’t get an MD degree for breaking out into new territory, maybe if you’re doing a research program thereafter, you do but not on the basics. Besides, all these doctors who are opposing COVID, they’re all being censored. They’re all being hammered. The powers that be want to pull their medical licenses.
It’s so outrageous, the censorship of Dr. Mercola, GreenMedInfo and all of these websites by the President of the United States denouncing him. This is like we’re going into a hard system of communism. Of course, I know it well from Wilhelm Reich that happened in the 1940s and ‘50s. It’s happening all over again. Certainly, what happened to the people who were advocating ether, it happened to them. Here we go, the science and medicine of this day is turning out to be something like in the time of the Catholic Church when Galileo was threatened with torture in order to get him to recant.
It’s alarming and I’m so grateful that there are professionals like you out there willing to stick your neck out and put some information out there that challenges the status quo. About the ether, for example, what about it is so threatening to the scientific community and current school of thought?
Certain kinds of science theories have an appeal to the intellect that borders on religion. When you talk about the curved space-time of Einstein, you are talking of a claimed phenomenon that cannot be proven in a definitive way nor can it be disproven in a definitive way. This is anti-science because it’s a core element of modern science or at least, it should be from the Philosopher Popper that a valid scientific theory is one that can be proven or disproven.
If you start talking, let’s say about God, God is a religious idea. It’s a religious feeling. You cannot prove God in heaven or any other tangible way like you can prove that gravity exists. We know gravity exists. Einstein had the theory of gravity as curved space-time but the ether theorists had an even better theory of gravity as a flow of the ether down into the Earth like a river flowing. It’s carrying us along with it like we are leaf floating in a river.

When you start talking about these divergent concepts, one is tangible and real. You can touch it and work with it. The other is often to some Netherworld that you cannot see, touch, feel or document. Who gyrates towards one or the other theory is a point that has to do with experiential factors. It has to do with character structure. It has to do if people are more easily amenable to belief systems of one or another kind.
It’s often said that the modern physicist has become atheist but they’ve supplanted it with this Einstein curved space-time, which has become a new religion for them. They cannot demonstrate curved space-time. You cannot see it. You cannot touch it. They talk about that. Astrophysics has built a whole house of cards based upon that, which include things like black holes. Nobody’s ever seen a black hole. Every magazine or movie picture of a black hole is an artist’s rendition. The quasars, talk about quasars at the edge of the known universe with The Big Bang Theory.
The Big Bang Theory is also a theory. It’s never been exclusively or unilaterally proven. There is a great deal of evidence against it. The astronomer Halton Arp came up with all kinds of solid objections to it. He was the guy who helped build the Palomar Observatory. He was the Dean of the American Astronomers. You couldn’t get higher up in profession than him just as Dayton Miller back in the early 1900s. He was the top guy in his profession. It didn’t matter. Halton Arp was thrown out of the establishment because he dared to question some of the basic assumptions that underpinned The Big Bang Theory, the expanding universe theory.
He was not able to get access to the telescopes anymore. He could not get grant money. He was relegated to a back seat in a position in a research establishment. Eventually, he lost that and he had to move to Europe where he got a job with the Max Planck Institute. He wrote all kinds of books which were ignored by his profession, except for bad reviews. They were embraced by a whole new young generation of scientists and scholars who couldn’t talk about him in their universities but they nevertheless embraced him.
You mentioned that there are a lot of young people who understand that there is a life force or energy to this Earth that is holding us together and keeping us well. There’s much more openness in the younger generation to the possibility that there is an ether as opposed to this Einstein theory of the space being void.
One of the prime examples in Hollywood movies is the Star Wars movies, for example. They talk about the force. “May the force be with you,” and all of that. I often wonder if the movie producers actually read Reich. I don’t know, I’m not close to them to ask that question. When Obi-Wan Kenobi says, “It’s the force that holds the universe together and binds us together,” and so on, he’s got it exactly as Reich had written about decades earlier.
Also, their space travel of warp speed, they talk about in other movies as well, that they create tunnels in space. A tunnel in what? In a tunnel on Earth, we talk about digging through the rocks to make a tunnel. What are they tunneling through to make these warp speed things work? It’s all faster than the speed of light, Star Wars and Star Trek. Otherwise, their concept of traveling from point A to point B would be totally simplified by all these relativistic time distortions which would make it impotent and kind of sterile. That’s the difference for you. That’s an example of how this has entered into the popular mind.
Short of building my own orgone accumulator, what are some other ways in which I can tap into the healing energy of the ether?
Let’s say the ether or the orgone energy because Reich was the one who discovered the orgone energy or the life energy in a scientific context. He wasn’t the only one but he was the best one in my opinion. Environmental contaminations are so widespread. We mentioned the problem of all this electromagnetic pollution, 5G and all this stuff. We’re talking about waves at the microwave frequencies that are traveling through this ether or this orgone energy. They’re one and the same thing and it distorts it. It makes it less life beneficial.
Reich talked about this as well. He said that strong electromagnetic fields, as well as atomic radiation, can irritate the orgone energy and make it less of life beneficial. He wrote about this. This was before a lot of the people were writing about the dangers of nuclear bomb testing and so on. He was an early critic of that. The properties of your home, of your neighborhood, if you have Wi-Fi in your home, this is a bad thing. Many people are talking about the badness of 5G and Wi-Fi and so on who have no concept of life energy. They don’t even talk about that. They just look at the evidence from the experiments from the biology and they see people’s immune systems are being degraded.
I put chapters in my Orgone Accumulator Handbook on how to clean up your energetic environment. One of the first things I talk about is getting rid of fluorescent lights. Making sure that your computer is a flat-screen computer. More than anything, getting rid of all Wi-Fi. Put your computer back on an ethernet cable. Don’t have Wi-Fi signals because they permeate your entire house. You then got the problem of what’s going on with your neighbors. The 5G towers or other kinds of radiating towers. I moved because I kept running into this problem when I was doing my research. I could not get the kind of good positive results in my orgone energy experiments using the accumulator when I lived in big city environments. I had to take the experiments out into the countryside in order to get good results.
Eventually, 1994 was when I moved up here to Oregon at a high mountain location so we could get optimal results on these orgone energy experiments. I’ve been publishing research that’s done in an optimal environment. I would say the results can be reduced by up to half if we did the same experiments in a big city. That’s one of the practical reflections of this. When these microwaves are traveling through the ether as their mechanism of transmission, they distort it. They change its properties. This is what we see with the orgone energy.
Also, it alters the properties of life energy. That not only makes it a little difficult to build an orgone accumulator but it’s impacting your body. The life energy in your body is impacted. If you persist to live in that kind of environment over the long term, your immune system is going to show gradually decreasing strength and viability. For the long-term health of people, they have to address this. It’s like indoor cigarette smoking or cigar smoking.
It’s very sobering.
Think of a smoking room in an airport. You’ve seen these addicted people go and sit, it’s a tremendous amount of smoke in there. That’s what your house looks like you when you’re using Wi-Fi but you can’t see it.
It’s compromising your health and the health of those around you. This is the thing. I was driving out to my friend’s house, I saw numerous towers every few miles that are emitting all kinds of waves and millimeter waves ostensibly to help us connect better but at the same time, we’re compromising our health.
They help us to disconnect better as well. I saw many examples, I’m sure you have too, where a room of people, everybody’s looking at their little i-Toy in front of them, both children and adults. They’re clicking away and not having any human contact with each other. In the older generations, this never occurred. You’d have strangers striking up conversations and talking to each other and making emotional eye contact and so on. This is dying in our culture and in the whole culture of the world. We don’t even know what the ramifications of that are going to be.
The obedience syndrome to COVID is based upon such things. “My little eye toy says, “I should social distance.” “My eye toy says I got to go get a shot.” “My eye toy says this and that and the other, I better obey or otherwise I’ll be a bad person. Look at him. He’s not doing any. He doesn’t even have an eye toy. What kind of ignorant stupid fool and danger to society he is?” This is the emotional content, nobody is saying those words but that’s the emotion.

People don’t even realize it. The foundation says technology is servant but what happens is people become owned by their devices as opposed to the other way around.
Exactly. Computers were supposed to set us free.
You’ve given us so much to think about, James. I wish we could go on and on. Happily, we will see you at the conference this November 2021 and we’ll get to hear more on the subject from you. As I wrap up now, I want to ask you the question I often pose at the end here. A practical question. If the reader could do one thing to improve or protect their health, what would you recommend that they do?
That always has a dual answer. On the one side, you want to move away from the bad things. On the other side, you want to move towards the good things. Moving away from all of this electromagnetic gadget stuff, make your life simpler and healthier. On the other side, read and study Wilhelm Reich on the orgone energy discovery and the life energy discovery.
Get my book on the orgone energy accumulator and the ether drift book if you want to find out more about the science on that side of things so that you can build yourself an orgone blanket. All you need for an orgone blanket is some old wool, army blanket type thing and some steel wool. That’s it. You just layer them in a special way and you’ve made one. By the time you’re finished, your hands will be electrified just feeling this thing if you’re alive, at least anyway. Those would be my simple answers. Move away from the bad and move towards the good.
Thank you so much, James. I appreciate the conversation.
I appreciate you being open, Hilda. Thank you.
