Indiana lawmakers are considering groundbreaking legislation that would eliminate vaccine mandates for all Hoosiers.
SB 174 removes all vaccine requirements for children and adults in public and private K–12 schools, child care centers, colleges, universities, and medical training programs. It also prohibits employers from conditioning employment, wages, or benefits on vaccination.
Importantly, the bill establishes the right to bodily integrity, which protects individuals from being forced to undergo any medical intervention, including vaccines, and creates criminal penalties for violations.
This landmark legislation restores parental and individual choice by protecting informed consent, ensuring that medical decisions are made by the individual or their parent/guardian—not by the state or an employer.
SB 174 also improves vaccine safety monitoring by requiring vaccination records to be included in child and maternal death reports, allowing the state to track outcomes without mandating interventions.
The bill also safeguards parental rights at school-based health centers, requiring written parental consent and presence for any child to receive medical services. It protects students in healthcare training programs and healthcare workers from being coerced into receiving vaccines against their conscience. Finally, SB 174 broadly prohibits vaccine discrimination, including exclusion, quarantine, or other penalties based solely on vaccination status.
SB 174 has been referred to the Senate Health and Provider Services Committee, where it can be advanced or blocked.
