Please support House Bill 16, legislation that would allow the distribution of raw milk products through herdshare agreements. Share far and wide.
HB 16, Representative Tarr’s herd share bill is on the move! If you aren’t familiar with it, it would put the existing regulations allowing herd shares into statute and allow herd shares to include raw milk products such as cheese.
March 22 it was introduced before the House Resources Committee and Suzy Crosby offered a succinct and compelling case for herd share.
Now it is your turn! Feel welcome to forward this email to others who have an interest in raw milk and herd shares.
When: Friday, March 29 at 1pm is public testimony before House Resources. The meeting starts at 1pm and, as of now, HB 16 is first on the agenda. http://www.akleg.gov/basis/Bill/Detail/?Root=HB 16
Where/How: If you can go to a Legislative Information Office to testify, it provides the best sound quality. Here is a list of offices: http://akleg.gov/lios.php If you cannot, email me and I’ll get you a phone number to call into the meeting. If you do this – best sound quality is if you can call from a land line. Whether from a land line or cell, please to NOT use speaker phone as it garbles your voice.
If you would like to send written testimony, you may submit it to house.resources@akleg.gov it will be entered into the record. Emails received by 4pm on March 28 will copied and distributed to all members in advance of the meeting. If you write, please include your name and residence address when you write. You may do both written and oral testimony, and reference your written in your oral, allowing for more details there.
What: You will have between 1 and 3 minutes for oral testimony (the length depends on how many people call to testify). Key to introduce yourself and where you live, say if you support the bill, and then highlight particular aspects that are important and/or of concern to you and why.
More Information: You’ll find the bill, video from the March 25 hearing, and documents at this link. This is also where you’ll find additional documents and written testimony as they are submitted to the record. http://www.akleg.gov/basis/Bill/Detail/31?Root=hb%2016#tab5_4
I am supporting Representative Tarr’s efforts to get HB 16 passed. Feel free to call or email me if you have questions, suggestions of others we should be in touch with, or to be sure that I add you to our list of people with an interest in herd share for notification as the bill (hopefully, with public support) moves through the legislature.
AND, a PS if you are reading this far – Governor Dunleavy’s budgeted eliminates the Division of Agriculture and the State Dairy Inspector. Representative Tarr is working to keep both of those programs funded and in place. Your emails of support from around the state are helpful in demonstrating to people who may not be familiar with the reach of Alaska’s agriculture. A brief email (separate from that supporting HB 16) to Rep.Geran.Tarr@akleg.com will be entered into the record and forwarded to your Representative and Senator.
