Cell phones, laptops, tablets, smart refrigerators, thermostats, and driverless cars. The list of new technology and devices is ever-expanding. But with these technologies come some problems. Studies indicate that constant contact with non-native electromagnetic fields (EMFs) is leading to nausea, fatigue, anxiety, depression, headaches and more. EMFs also interfere with circadian rhythm and suppress immune system function, among other health-compromising effects.
What can we do to mitigate the damage? Daniel DeBaun, an engineer with over 30 years of experience in the telecommunications field and the founder of DefenderShield, offers ideas on today’s episode. While our level of exposure is vastly greater than it was 15 years ago, he reminds us that we can take practical steps to protect ourselves including disabling transmitters on our smartphones, keeping them away from our bodies, as much as possible, and putting a timer on our wifi router so that it turns off when we go to sleep.

We’ve got cell phones, laptops, tablets, smart refrigerators, thermostats and cars. The list of new technology and devices is ever-expanding, but how are all of these affecting our health? Could constant contact with non-native electromagnetic fields be leading to anxiety, depression, headaches and more? If so, do we have to move to the middle of the woods to protect ourselves? This is episode 266 and our guest is Daniel DeBaun, an engineer with over 30 years of experience in the telecommunications field.
He is the Founder of DefenderShield, a company that produces technology to block electromagnetic field exposure. In this episode, he covers the gamut in our conversation. He addresses questions of electro hypersensitivity, symptoms from radiation exposure that include immune system repression and even damage to our circadian rhythm and things like that. He also offers practical tips to reduce and block our EMF exposure.

Welcome to the show, Daniel.
Hilda, thank you so much for inviting me back to the show. I love your audience and their willingness to learn more and more about our environment and its impact on the human body. Thanks again.
Make your environment safe. You are the architect of your own environment.
It’s our pleasure. I want you to talk to us about what are we exposing ourselves to that we didn’t expose ourselves to many years ago?
If you think about it, 15 to 20 years ago, there were no cell phones, no Wi-Fi routers, no tablets and no Roku devices working on Wi-Fi. All of these devices have come into our environment in the last few years. Years ago, there was nothing in our environment. All of a sudden, there’s a huge order of magnitude more ambient electromagnetic radiation. When your cell phone connects to a cell tower, it’s using an electromagnetic radiation connection to do that. When your laptop is connecting to a Wi-Fi, they’re transmitting electromagnetic radiation signals, a frequency that’s touching and going to the Wi-Fi and making that connection.
I’m on my phone and my phone is communicating with a cell tower, and then I’ve got my laptop and my laptop is connecting to my Wi-Fi router, which is reaching out to some other tower, but it’s not just me. It’s everybody around me with the same thing. What does this mean for our health and our lives?
What it means is we’re evolutionary beings. We evolve with our environment. If you think about it, as I said, many years ago, we have orders of magnitude more ambient electromagnetic radiation and the sources within our own immediate environment have grown tenfold. In your cell phone, Hilda, when you use a cell phone, you have a cell tower connection, you have a Bluetooth connection, and you have a Wi-Fi transmitter. All three transmitters are in that one little device. Again, many years ago, it didn’t exist.
What does that mean to us? It turns out that if you think about an increased ambient level of exposure that didn’t exist years ago, it can be a lot. For example, if you think about a laptop or a cell phone, that’s 1.6 watts per kilogram. That’s not a huge amount of power, but it is a power level that actually connects directly to your head when you’re using it. If you take and look into a classroom where all the kids have their laptops connected to the routers, the signal level ambient, the room fills with a bunch of signals can be as much as 0.5 watts or a third of a watt per kilogram. That is 7 to 8 hours a day and the question is, how is our body responding?
That’s exactly what I was going to ask you because you said we’re evolutionary beings. We’re changing according to our environment. Some people might shrug their shoulders and say, “What’s the big deal? We have something around us that we didn’t have many years ago.”
It turns out that it’s actually a pretty large deal because even though this has only been around for a little bit of time, so was the research. In recent few years or so, or from the last time you and I spoke, the network toxicity program and the Federal government released a report that says a cell phone can create a DNA-damaged cell in the frontal lobe. It can also do it to the heart. It can mutate and become cancerous. That didn’t exist the last time you and I spoke.
What we also know is that it has been reinforced with the Ramazzini Institute. They did the same thing as the Federal government. They spent $25,000 on a study and they found the same thing. The importance of this is its statistical significance. That is, the populations were so large that they could say with a confidence level that frontal lobe and heart cancers can emerge from direct exposures, but I’m not worried about that. I’m worried about the neurological, the physiological, the body pains our body has, the burning sensation, and the stress on our body. That’s what we may want to talk a little bit about.
Yes, because I understand you have connections to a bunch of clinics that are seeing some patients coming in who are complaining of different ailments that may be related to their radiation exposure.
It’s funny you should say that because I was talking with a practitioner. I’ll tell the story a little bit further. I have a biochemist who has been a business associate for years. She works with clinics. We used to talk about a cell is a cell. A cell doesn’t make up a different way of responding in a toxic environment. In other words, when you have a volatile organic compound like the smell of gas and you get a headache or your eyes hurt as a result of that, your body is responding to that gas if that’s a toxic gas.
That same reaction is now being seen in electromagnetic radiation. In fact, what science is talking about and clinics were seeing more often is you probably heard of oxidative stress. It’s free radicals and antioxidants being imbalanced. That creates electrical differences in the cells. In the last few years or so, Cell Danger Response or CDR is an evolutionary cellular biological response which is from chemical, physical and microbiome exposures.
The outside environment touching the body has evolved to the extent where if it sees that stuff, it says, “I got to stop working. I got to protect myself. I’m not going to produce the protein I need to and coordinate it. I’m not going to take the oxygen. I should try to preserve myself.” All of a sudden, the body is beginning to react as an evolutionary being to an environment that has been an evolution of the human body. Now, the triggers are the ambiance in the environment. It’s the cell phones and the laptops that are producing emissions.
This is alarming even though you were saying you’re not terribly worried about it. Why were you saying that by the way? Remind me.
I’m not terribly worried about the cell creating cancer as a result of exposure. I’m not worried about that. That percentage is quite low. It is absolutely without any doubt and it is substantiated by thousands and thousands of recent research studies that there’s a clear link between very tight close exposures in long durations of time to the body and its functions in the body, particularly the breakdown of a cell, with DNA damage to mutate itself.
When you were speaking, the first thought that came to my mind was the young people who I often hear now using the words anxiety, overwhelm and brain fog. I’m like, “You’re in your twenties. How is it that you’re struggling so much?” Are they in an environment or in a toxic soup of radiation that is causing their bodies to shut down on some level?
You just described a classic body response to exposures within the environment, particularly the classrooms, I’m assuming. There’s no question about it. You may remember I spoke about multiple chemical sensitivity the last time we spoke. I may have mentioned to you that roughly 20% of us are multiple chemically sensitive. When we smell something in the air like gas, our bodies respond. We get headaches and we get ill in many different ways. It turns out that statistics are exactly the same thing for electric hypersensitive. That is exactly 20%. Clinics are telling me now that it’s more like 30%. That is the human body’s response to the environment. The sources, as believed by many of these clinics, are the exposures to their environment like kids in a classroom.
A cell phone can create a DNA-damaged cell in your frontal lobe and also to your heart. It can mutate and become cancerous.
This is what I’m thinking when you’re talking about chemical sensitivity. I know a lot of us are like, “I don’t like it when I’m around people with a lot of perfume or colognes.” Even those people who say, “It’s no big deal. I don’t mind. Fragrance and scented candles are no big deal,” but later, they have a headache and they don’t know what to attribute it to. It may be from those things.
The reason I’m bringing this up is because some people may not realize that they are responding to their environment. They do have this sensitivity, but because they’re constantly exposed to it, they think, “I guess I’m not getting enough sleep or maybe I’m working too hard.” They attributed it to other things. How is it that these people in these clinics suspect radiation in the atmosphere as a cause of these ailments that they’re seeing?
Here’s the statistic, 20% to 30% of the population is electro hypersensitive. Of that, 80% are women. Believe it or not, for some reason or another, women seem to be more negatively impacted when there’s this change in the environment. Some of the clinics were saying they think it’s hormonal. They think it’s the biological differences in the brain.
Others are talking about mineral differences in the body. There are lots of things. Be careful. If you’re getting a headache, it could be from the router that’s 10 feet away from you. It absolutely could. It can be from the constant pinging of the cell phone that you have in your pocket. All of these things are legitimate. It’s true and it’s proven. We know it’s a fact.
If that’s 20% or 30%, how do we know that? The clinics are now becoming a bit more aware. When you want to have another baby, what happens? You can’t conceive. The doctor goes, “Do you have a technology around you.” The very first question they ask is, “Do you have transmitters around you?” If you remove the transmitters, you improve the probability of becoming pregnant. They know those direct links occur. One clinic I know of that has created real science before they even treat a patient, they learn about their environment. They try to weed out influences within that environment.
They try to weed out the multiple organic compounds. They try to weed out other gases in the air that may impact them that are from an adjacent location. They go through a very rigid evaluation. Almost every time they have a patient that is having a difficult time in their environment, they find constant sources of electromagnetic radiation.

Ancestral Supplements makes New Zealand-sourced nose-to-tail organ meats, bone marrow and bovine tracheal cartilage in simple, convenient gelatin capsules. The life work of Dr. John F. Prudden shows that bovine tracheal cartilage had unique and powerful effects on wound healing, immune conditions, joint health, and other conditions considered to be treatment-resistant to conventional therapies.
All of these conditions were immune in nature with the exception of the wound-healing studies. According to Dr. Prudden, bovine cartilage closely resembles fetal mesenchyme, the primordial tissue from which muscles, bones, tendons, ligaments, skin, fat and bone marrow, the heart of the immune system, all develop. Bovine tracheal cartilage provided concentrated amounts of connective tissue, immunoregulators, and cartilage building blocks that are now missing from the modern diet. Let’s talk about those sources a little bit because I always like to make sure that we have glimmers of hope in our conversations. I want to give our readers some practical takeaways on how they can start to reduce their exposure.
We spoke about this last time. Bees in the room. Every one of these transmitters is like bees in the room. If you have one bee, it won’t kill you, but a thousand will. All you got to do to eliminate any severe dangers to your own body literally is by moving away from the cell phone and turning off the transmitters. You have three transmitters. Turn two of them off and make sure it’s 4-foot or more away from you and you’re perfectly safe. It’s a matter of managing your environment. You are the architect of your own environment. You can control it.
At night, I have a timer on my router. I turn it off. It turns on in the morning at 7:00 when I’m up. If I’m doing business and I’m still working in the modern environment, I’m minimizing the bees in the room when I’m in that room. When I have a TV box, I have an ethernet wired to it, not a Wi-Fi, because I improved the transmission and I eliminated the Wi-Fi signal being transmitted from the device. It’s a matter of this is not a time to get distressed. It’s all about making sure you understand your own environment, take actions to reduce those bees in the room, and you’re perfectly fine, believe it or not.
It’s good to see where the bees are located. As you say, the further away, the better. I was at a friend’s house the other day and I noticed that her Wi-Fi router was in her kitchen. It was right near the place where we sat down to eat.
You should put that router in the farthest part of the house in a closet somewhere that no one ever goes. You’re still going to have access.
20%to 30% of the population is electro hypersensitive. Of that, 80% are women.
Another friend of mine works in a place where she said the Wi-Fi router is right above her desk.
That’s crazy. The problem with that is the constant load. It’s throughout the old day that it has been bombarding her whole body. Honestly, the head is the most susceptible part of the body. It’s soft tissue, so you want to minimize those exposures. We haven’t talked about this yet, but please don’t have Wi-Fi, cell phones and routers in a bedroom because that’s a sanctuary that has to have none of those toxins. Why? Because it’s screwing around with your circadian rhythm. When you have a cell phone next to your bed, it’s screwing around with your pineal gland. It is literally disrupting melatonin from being created. You don’t want that near you. Why? Because you need your circadian rhythm, so your body improves and rebuilds during the night.
What people don’t realize is it’s like we’re all little batteries. We are electrical human beings. What happens is our circuits get thrown off by all of these other waves that are coming at us. That’s what I hear you saying.
There’s no question about it. In fact, when I was in the telecom business, I used to look for crosstalk between one system to the next. The transmission of one system can interfere with the transmission of another. What we now see, when you have devices close to you like that, it is truly interfering with your electrical systems and disrupting your systems. The example I mentioned about the pineal gland is crosstalk. This transmission is interfering with internal biological responses.
In fact, the clinics are noticing the frontal lobe. They can measure the electrical conductivity of the body and when it’s reduced, they know it’s being artificially interfered with from emissions within their environment. You’re absolutely right. The magnitude of the body response can be significant with some very little emissions crosstalk. I mentioned CDR. What happens with the CDR when it says, “I’m not going to talk to my neighbor. I’m not going to respond. I’m going to try to save myself,” there’s a reduction of oxygen. It is carbon monoxide buildup, the ratio exchange in the body. That’s not good and by the way, it screws around with your gut.
I’m so glad you brought that up because I was going to ask you. We mentioned headaches. We mentioned problems with fertility. What other symptoms might we be experiencing that are related to our radiation exposure?
Your eyes may hurt and your ears may ring. You may have a problem sleeping. You have headaches. You’re nauseous. You have fatigue. Your body aches. Here’s one that is becoming far more important than all of us realize, depression and anxiety. That’s all frontal lobe control. I’ll tell you a little bit about what the clinics do about that in a minute. There is stress that’s occurring in your body. That creates flu-like symptoms, concentration problems, and loss of vision. There’s a litany.
When you have electromagnetic radiation exposures, it suppresses your immune system. Dr. Johansen did a study a few years ago. He has proven that the immune system is suppressed under the circumstances. If you have a gut that’s not quite working properly, it is going to be difficult for the body to fix itself if you don’t minimize these exposures. These are now exposures that your body is responding to and you want to make sure that the body is in the best condition for it to respond to these kinds of toxins in the environment.
I love some of your practical tips about moving those bees away and making our bedroom a sanctuary. For the people who are extremely electromagnetic sensitive, aren’t people looking for places to move to and get away from it all?
We released an article that we look worldwide to where we know there is a safe environment for people to live in.
Did you find anything?
We found quite a few places on Earth that actually minimize exposure because there’s interference with microscopes and communications. We have quite a number of places in the world. I’m trying to get the list of where some of these are.
That would be great if you could tell us some. I’ll keep it in my back pocket because I feel like those of us who live in apartment buildings or cities are necessarily going to get more exposure from our neighbor’s Wi-Fi networks and from the cell towers. I don’t think I told you this, Daniel. We were looking around at houses and thinking, “Should we move to the country? We’re tired of the city.” We did this AntennaSearch.com, where you can see how many cell towers are in the vicinity in a 2 or 3-mile radius.
We would see a house and it would have zero. We see another house that had two. We saw a house with five and I was like, “That’s too many.” When we got home and searched our own home, there were 22 towers in the neighborhood. We do want to move. It’s alarming. We’re doing what we can to mitigate our exposure locally in our own home, but we’re still being bombarded. Talk to us about places where we can go where we might minimize our exposure on a broader scale.
Believe it or not, Green Bank, West Virginia. That’s one of those places that have banned devices completely. In places like Snowflake, Arizona is a clean environment. Grass Valley, California, is a green environment, and Rockvale, Colorado. The list goes on. Internationally, you can go to France and there are places in France. There are places in Italy. There are places throughout the world where you can find that.
The point you mentioned before is far more important. All of us can’t move to these places and we’re not going to go panic about it, but what we have to do is make sure that we control our own environment. When you have a smart meter on your house, people ask me, “What should I do? I’m panicking. Isn’t that good?” If it’s on the garage and you have a two-car garage and your bedrooms on the other side of the garage, there’s literally nothing to worry about. It’s a spurious transmission. It’s over 25-foot away from you, and the power level in your bedroom is extremely low. Don’t worry. You’re fine.
There are ten times more bugs in the gut than there are cells in the body.
If the smart meter is literally on the wall of your bedroom and your head post is against the wall where the meter is, move the bed. Move it to the other side of the room or maybe even outside. Look for the bees in the room. You don’t panic about it and you find ways of managing that. Now your neighbor’s stuff, don’t worry about it. The distances are so far that there’s very little influence on your environment. It’s only the real immediate power levels that you’re trying to reduce.
That is helpful. As we start to wrap up, I want to go back to the point you were going to make about what the clinics do, particularly for people struggling with depression and anxiety. I think you were going to talk about that.
One of the things that have been a surprise to me and quite a number of us, it turns out that for people who are being exposed to these ambient, particularly the hypersensitive, one of the very first things that get disrupted is brain pattern. People walk around with alpha when they should be beta and vice versa. In other words, they’re walking around during the day and their brain is sleeping. It’s almost as if the crosstalk is interfering with the biological operation of the brain, particularly the frontal lobe and that’s where anger is. That’s where depression is. It’s all in the frontal lobe.
What the clinics are doing is they’re finding ways of adjusting brainwave patterns through light and sound. It’s very specific. There are tools that have been out for a long time but are now being targeted, particularly the hypersensitive patients. What these clinicians are doing is adjusting the brain patterns to the right way. The way they know is they measure it. They look at the continuity or the conductivity between two points of the brain and they actually can measure the difference when there’s a pattern change in the brain.
Once that occurs, then you can fix the leaky gut. You can fix the gut problem. As you know, Hilda, the gut is really important. There are ten times more bugs in the gut than there are cells in the body. In other words, it’s so predominant in your body that an imbalance of a virus or bacteria within the gut can be a serious concern. When you begin adjusting the brain, sleep and health pattern with good eating and all the kinds of things you got to do with these clinics, there are ways of turning that problem around and improving the biological performance of the body under these exposures. They call that resilience.
This is so good to hear and I would be remiss if I didn’t ask you. Are these naturopathic clinics? If so, can we put a link in the show notes so people can find them? They sound amazing.
Some are and others are physicians throughout the country. I’ll send you a list of those and I’ll tell you why I’m so excited about you asking that question. I’ve been in business in this space for quite some time. I always had a frustration. I couldn’t help so many people who are electro hypersensitive. I couldn’t help them because I could tell them to reduce the number of bees in the room. I could make it tolerable, but I couldn’t push all their symptoms away. I didn’t have the knowledge or the skillset to help them do that.
Now, I’ve seen clinics stepping up to this. One, in particular, I call him Dr. EMF because he takes people who we know are in IT environments and constantly exposed all day who literally can’t even take a walk into the clinic. They have to use a wheelchair after several sessions to adjust their brain patterns, the pineal gland, and all the kinds of things that they got to worry about. The brainstem is so important for balance, for example. He brings control into that or the clinic does. He has turned people who were severely hypersensitive and now is living close to a normal life. It’s spectacular that the medical community is beginning to step up to this.
I want to wrap up with a question I often pose at the end here. If the reader could do one thing to improve their health, what would you recommend that they do?
Maintain a strong exercise regimen. I’m over 65 years old and I think I’ve helped reduce the evolutionary path I’m on because I do yoga. I do walk. I don’t run anymore. I found power walking is better for me. I would say, don’t underestimate the benefit, the psychological, the brain, the body, and the balance that you get from a good healthy regimen of exercise.
That’s excellent advice and a fun note to end on. I appreciate your time, Daniel. Thank you so much.
