Children of the Forest
By Elsa Beskow
Floris Books
This is an endearing and fairy-tale-like story of a darling family that lives in the roots of an old pine tree. They spend their days happily living off the land—berrying, gathering nuts and seeds, playing with the animals and preparing for winter. The four children all wear red and white spotted caps, so that if they need to hide, they look just like toadstools. With each passing season, Elsa Beskow highlights the joys and sometimes struggles of what it is like to live off the land, and yet the beauty of connecting with nature remains throughout. Her text is also rich with detail, so much so that the reader can easily imagine being present in the forest with the children. Beautifully illustrated and colorful, children will love poring over each page.
