TALKING POINTS
1. Selling homemade foods is a way to support economic growth in Tennessee by allowing entrepreneurial home cooks to start their businesses with resources they already have and provide their neighbors with fresh food.
2. Right now in Tennessee entrepreneurs can sell shelf-stable foods like granola, jams, and baked goods. HB 0130 will broaden Tennessee’s current cottage food law to now allow the sale of perishable goods such as cut produce, chicken pot pies, frozen doughs, and cooked vegetables and beans.
3. HB 0130 will require the labeling of the homemade food products so that consumers will be making an informed decision about the homemade foods they purchase.
4. Cottage foods have a great track record for safety; there are few, if any, illnesses attributed to producers operating under cottage food laws.
WAPF will send out future alerts on HB 130 as events warrant.
